Re: dimples at the bottom of the spine

Hi ,

Our daughter has the " dimple " also and had an ultrasound for it after

birth just to be on the safe side. Our origional Ped. Ortho ordered

it even though the dimple was closed at the bottom ('s dimple is

actually pretty shallow). " Dimples " or a " patch of hair " on the skin

of the lower spine can sometimes signify spinal deformity (spina

bifida). Most pediatricians will not order ultrasounds if they can

clearly see a bottom to the dimple (meaning the small hole is closed)

then it should be no concern. According to some of the sites I have

read, Spina bifida occulta (hidden spina bifida) is quite commom,

approx. 40% of the population are born with it and never know it

because there are usually no symptoms. Those people may only ever

find out if they have an ultrasound for an unrelated back problem.

Some statistics say that for those people it should be regarded as

insignificant and that they are at no greater risk of having a child

born with SP than anyone else. I have found some of the sites a bit

confusing though because some say that those individuals with a

dimple or patch of hair " may " be regarded as more significant and are

at higher risk, perhaps that was the reason for 's ultrasound.

My only concern for her after they cleared her was for her future

children, I hope that she would fall into the group that should not

be concerned with it. I have often wondered though if indeed her

bilateral clubfoot could be connected in some way to the dimple. I

was pretty shocked about the dimple at birth and finding out why she

should have the ultrasound because I had been on folic acid three

months before she was even conceived and I know that folic acid is a

key to avoiding up to 70% of congenital defects, they say.

Hopefully with all this extraordinary research they are doing these

days we will have answers to all of these questions.

Just some of our experiences with the subject.

Hey,

I know we discussed this once before but my memory is failing me lately. Do

these little dimples have something to do with the clubfoot thing? I really

just noticed them last night when Christian was dancing naked in my living

room.

Sorry if this is a silly question..I have to ask.

Sometimes the dimple can be associated with spina

bifida occulta which is not serious at all. I guess

since regular spina bifida can be associated with

clubfoot, it could be related. Many of the children

from here have it. Kelsey has such a dimple but no

underlying problem just the clubfoot.

I have twins sons who are 21 years old, one was born with spina bifida. The

other twin has a deep dimple on his tush. When they were born they took him

right away thinking he may have Occulta, but he did not. Then we later adopted a

little guy who also has a deep dimple there. I asked right away about it, but

they said it was not SBO. So I think kids have them, for no reason at all. :)

I think it does not have anything to do with it since I have the dimples but I

do not have clubfoot etc. My son also has the dimples and doesnt have clubfoot

as well. Now does not have the dimples but DOES have clubfoot, so that

is why I dont think it has anything to do with clubfoot.
