Hi Dee: I've had REB, (rotten egg burps), too, along with a similar type of pain as you describe your friend having, but I can't say for sure what causes them. All I can say for sure is that they only seem to occur after I binge on very fatty foods. (I should say " used to occur, " because as a post-op excess fat just makes my poops runny.) And speaking of poops, whenever I got rotten egg burps, my next " movement " would be yellowish in color. My mother, (who also has REB from time to time), theorizes that it is caused by excess bile production -- probably triggered by eating excess fat. She thinks they may have something to do with the gallbladder as well. But Mom is NOT a medical professional -- she merely plays one off-Broadway. Coincidentally, (or maybe not so coincidentally?), my surgeon, Dr. Anthone, said after my DS that my gallbladder looked " like a bag full of marbles. " So, depending on what your friend thinks of Mom's guess/theory, she might want to see a gastroenterologist to see if her gallbladder and/or liver are okay.
