Guest guest
Hi, is finally " walking " . Well, he took his first wobbly steps today. Only 2 or 3 before falling into my arms. I was so excited, I picked him up and we danced all over the kitchen!! He is 15 1/2 months, and I felt like he would never walk!! But today.......... I suppose it will be some time before finally ventures out with any confidence, but at least I see the progress at last. Question: He has been in the brace about 16 hours a day. I know that once they are walking it can go to 12 - 14, basically night and nap time. Can I reduce his hours already, even though his walking is more like collapsing into my arms after 3 steps or so? and 6/24/04 bcf s 18/7 --------------------------------- Yahoo! Guest guest
Yeah ! Way to go. Many doctors have different recommendations based on the individual child's feet of when to reduce hours. My son is just starting to take independent steps too, but my doctor intends to keep him at 16 hours until December at least (he will be 15 months then). He has another patient I know whose daughter is 21 months still wearing them 16 hours as well. I would check with your doctor before jumping on the reduction of hours. Guest guest
, You should expect your son to walk anywhere within the normal time frame of any child, clubfooted or no - that is I believe anywhere from 9 months to 19 months. The feet when corrected with the Ponseti method right from the beginning should be corrected by about 3 months of age. At that time they start in the brace and wear it for 23/7 for 3 months. After that the brace time should be gradually reduced. Some doctors do it more slowly, some more quickly, the thing to note is that you should never go from 23/7 to only 12-14 hrs. a day or nights only. This is not recommended, it often leads to relapses, and discontentment in the brace. Thus, with a gradual reduction schedule, most kids are down to about 12-14 hours a day by about the time they begin walking. Most docs allow you to go to this time frame once the child is really walking and weight bearing a good portion of his time. Guest guest
I believe average age of walking is anywhere from 12 - 18 months, although I've heard of babies walking at 9 months (my neice was one of them!). Your child shouldn't be wearing the shoes from 23 hours a day until they walk. The hours are gradually reduced so the brace won't hinder development at all. All babies are different, some will develop in some areas more quickly, and slower in others. This is true for clubfoot children, and for those who are born without clubfoot. I think you will find that the FAB really won't hinder development at all. My son has done everything on time, or even early in some cases. He can crawl with the brace on, pull himself to standing with it on, and can even shimmy himself along the couch with it on. He's 10 1/2 months. Without the brace, he can obviously do a little more, and certainly can do everything easier and more quickly. But we haven't noticed any hinderances due to the casts or the shoes. Keep your questions coming! > > What is the average age kids begin to walk if all goes as planned?- and how > do they walk with braces on 24/7 until they can walk?? Guest guest
, you're not ignorant - you're brilliant to be seeking your own answers to the questions you have! My son (Dr. Ponseti) walked freely at 14 months. My other son (non-Ponseti) didn't really walk till he was nearly 2 years old. s. Re: Celebrate with me - Walking!!! Question?
