Guest guest
I was in town yesturday and had a minute and only two kids so I stopped off at out old orthopedics office. I wanted them to see our perfect little feet- the ones they said needed surgery. They did remember us (been almost a year since we were there)- guess that tells you what a small place I call town is. Tenny did his walking thing and was cute and shy. They called to doc out of an examining room to see these little feet. From what they say, they send a baby off to have surgery and never hear from them again- the good news is the doctor they refer to is Ponseti Certified and doesn't do surgery. Anyway, the doctor took Tenny's foot and turned it over and over. Finally he said, " What did he (meaning Dr. Showalter) do to this foot. It looks wonderful and I can't even find the scar. " I explained the Ponseti thing (which he said he has heard of??) and the bracing protocol. He was interested in that and wanted to know what kind of bar and such. I told him straight out to just sent club feet to Dr. Showalter. He said he did, he just casted them for the first three or four months until they were old enough to see the surgeon. I told him to send them at birth, don't mess with them just send them to Boise. Don't know if it will change anything. I really don't know how many clubfeet come this orthos way- there just aren't many people out this way. But maybe he will just send a baby north next time and not mess around for so many months. At least all his clubfeet babies get referred (even if unknowingly) to a good doctor. Just had to share that. I still get a laugh out of " what did he do to these feet? " and Tenny's perfect little feet (which are thankfully sleeping right now)

Guest guest
, thanks for sharing!!! That's great that he is referring his cf patients to a Ponseti doctor. Wouldn't it be great if this local doctor would take it a step further and learn the proper casting method (Ponseti) for himself?! He may not even need to refer patients for surgery then!!! Guest guest
It would be great, but probably not worth it for him. I don't think there are more than 200-300 babies born a year in this area. Just not enough people. So what is that, one about every four or five years or so. I kinda hope that they next baby he sees he refers out at birth. Here is hoping. Re: Had to smile- " What did he do to this foot? " , thanks for sharing!!! Guest guest
Southern idaho about 25 miles over the Utah border. Nearest place with more than two houses is Malta about 8 or so miles north. We are coming to Boise on November 1st for a check up. I am glad that I will get this one out of the way before the snow flies. Glad to see another Idahoan here. Re: Had to smile- " What did he do to this foot?
