Guest guest
Hi folks, Raphael had his tenotomy yesterday, after four weekly casts. They put the emla cream (sp?) on an hour ahead of time, but it's hard to say whether it helped. He screamed during the procedure so hard that no sound was coming out and even cried a real tear again :-(. The lidocaine they injected after the snip seemed to do something though, since he eventually calmed down (after nursing really well), and then slept until he woke up screaming about when they said it would wear off. So we dosed him with the tylenol with codeine they'd given us, had another good nursing session, and he went back to sleep. He's basically been sleeping between doses ever since, and hardly nursing at all. I woke up totally engorged this morning, and pumped 4oz in short order. I switched to plain tylenol at 6am since this sleepiness is not like him! It seems to be working almost well enough. I'm a bit worried about the other meds still, though. The bottle said it had 6 doses in it, but we only found 3 and half (and only gave him 3). Part of the problem might be that after the first dose, the syringe they gave us wasn't long enough to reach the liquid, so we poured it into another container (a sippy cup). I'm afraid that it may have evaporated and concentrated some between the 2nd and 3rd dose, but even so, I don't think there were really 6 doses there. As I said, he seems to be okay with the plain tylenol now, but I'm upset with the pharmacy (at Children's in Seattle) for not preparing it in a way that made it easy to dispense and possibly for not giving us the full prescription :-(. What was your experience with this procedure? When did your babies stop being in so much pain? Anyone else have a sleepy/not nursing baby afterwards? For how long? Thanks, -- Toby 5/02 Raphael 9/05, lcf, tenotomy yesterday

Guest guest
My daughter was 12 months old when her tenotomy was done very early one morning under general anesthesia. She slept all day after we got her home, woke up, ate a little and then went back to sleep all night long. She woke up the next day and was fine, not even requiring the regular tylenol anymore. We did not use the codeine tylenol but they have her a big IV injection of pain medication before we left the hospital. I do not have experience with such a little one and the procedure though. I do know that the codeine has serious drowsiness effects and that may take a little time to wear off even after you quit giving it to him. If you are concerned, I would call your doctor and run everything by him/her. Jenni --- wrote: > Hi folks, > > Raphael had his tenotomy yesterday, after four > weekly casts. Guest guest
Thanks, Jenni. I have a call in to the doctor's office. He's still pretty sleepy, but he did have a good nursing session about an hour ago. I think the codeine's drowsiness might be wearing off. With a little luck, he'll be hungry again soon and I can get some relief on the other side too! > > My daughter was 12 months old when her tenotomy was > done very early one morning under general anesthesia. > She slept all day after we got her home, woke up, ate > a little and then went back to sleep all night long. > She woke up the next day and was fine, not even > requiring the regular tylenol anymore. Guest guest
Hi , WOW, your baby is going through alot - I would check the back of his little casts and see how they are (soft from the excess blood - the bloody show is normal). I would also check for the toes - touch them lightly, if they go from the color changes from pressing, they are okay; however, if the cast is on too tight, there might be a need for concern. Also check for slipping toes. You'll be able to see if they are slipping. If so, a change is required. As for my experience with Lhea, she was 3 months old, she was given General Anesthesia and pretty much as Jenni's baby, mine slept through the whole thing. Sure, there were times that she was not comfy, and nursing and cuddling kept her calm. However, that discomfort went away just as fast as it tried to settle. Also, keep the leg elevated a little by using a baby pillow under his leg. That may help whatever throbbing he may be experiencing. Lhea went through a 2nd tenotomy; this one was with Dr. Ponseti. I must say that I'm not certain is a local is enough for them - I sympathize with you. Lhea cried through the whole surgery with the exception of her casting. It is heartbreaking; but the healing and watching them develop with their corrected feet is worth it all. They are so resilient - have faith! Hope this helped - at least the first paragraph. Guest guest
Hi Jennipher, Thanks for the message. Raphael turned the corner around when I posted my note. He went from hollering when the four hours between doses were up to not needing any meds, with no transition in between. Woke up and ate, too, so we're much better now. His toes look fine (though this cast has protruded further past his toes that the previous ones, from the beginning [not a cast slip]), and there's no sign of blood through the cast. It's a soft fiberglass cast, so maybe that shows blood less easily? -- Toby 5/02 Raphael 9/05 lcf > > > Hi folks, > > > > Raphael had his tenotomy yesterday, after four > > weekly casts.
