Guest guest
We haven't been told to do any stretches, but I have been massaging his feet and stretching them since Aleksander was put in his shoes. I tend to stretch his feet when he's eating. He's in his high chair and his feet are sticking out so it is the perfect time. He doesn't mind at all, and sometimes will even giggle if I tickle him a little and then flex his foot. I also give him a little foot massage when he's in the tub every night. I use some methol bath soap (the baby stuff in the green bottle), and he always loves that. I try to make sure a massage the arch, the top of his foot, and his toes. He hasn't ever complained about it. His feet aren't terribly tight though, so perhaps that is the difference. > > Can you please tell me if anyone else has been advised to stretch your > little one's feet. Guest guest
We have to streach our daughters feet every night when we take off the boots for an hour.the steaching is only done for a few min. each foot. Vivian actually sleeps through it some times, or my husband will talk to her and keep her busy and she usually just laughs through it!she is only 3 months old, but if it hurt her I think she would be fussy or cry. maybe u should ask the doc. about that! --- amandajlear wrote: --------------------------------- Can you please tell me if anyone else has been advised to stretch your little one's feet. I feel that stretching helps but, to be quite frank, the pain he feels when I stretch his feet is really getting me down though I put a brave face on things as I know this is important. Guest guest
We have been stretching my son's foot for two months now while waiting for the doctor to do the tenotomy. He is now 4 months old and I don't feel like it has helped, or at least has not given him enough of a range for a positive outcome after the surgery. I am not sure if this answer is what you are looking for. > > Can you please tell me if anyone else has been advised to stretch your > little one's feet. Guest guest
, Who is your son's doctor again? I can't remember. Our doc, Dobbs in St. Louis, does recommend stretches. He says that Dr. Ponseti does not find the stretching necessary but he feels that it cannot hurt either. We don't stretch and hold, it is more like just a quick little stretch and release, repeat. We do about 20-30 reps of each 1 or 2 times a day, just takes a minute. But it does not hurt Sammy, and I don't believe that it should. If it is hurting him I would talk to your doctor - perhaps he can recommend a different way of doing it, or figure out if there is a cause for the pain. The description of the exercises Dobbs recommends is in the files section, towards the bottom of the list. Guest guest
i think one has to be careful of stretching exercises. It is true that Dr. Ponseti does not recommend them. I think this is due in part to his view that standing, jumping, walking, etc. are all that the foot needs as well as the very real possibility that stretches done incorrectly can cause rocker bottom. But that's just me speculating as to his basis for not recommending stretches. It is important to note that there is a right way to stretch so that you don't *break* the foot (rocker bottom). If parents are interested in stretching exercises (we do not do them) there is a copy of Dr. Dobbs pamphlet for stretches in the files section on this list. It will show you how to stretch safely, please read it. kori At 09:41 AM 10/20/2005, you wrote: >, >Who is your son's doctor again? I can't remember. Guest guest
, Are you really planning on taking your son to this doc for the surgery? Tenotomies should NEVER be done on an uncasted foot, any doc who thinks this is appropriate has his head in the sand. Can we help you find a doc in your are who will help your son properly? Waiting 2 mo's to do the tenotomy and stretching is so far NOT what should be done... I'm floored actually. I think you should trust your instincts, we mamas are usually right about these things. If you don't think it's helped, it probably hasn't. Kori At 09:34 AM 10/20/2005, you wrote: >We have been stretching my son's foot for two months now while >waiting for the doctor to do the tenotomy. Guest guest
Kori, I found all this information 4 months too late, I feel, so now I am doing backtracking. We are seeing Dr. Herzenberg for his opinion (though I am sure he will recomend casting prior to the tenotomy) in Baltimore next Friday after having emailed him and spoken to him on the phone. Ever since the tenotomy was scheduled and I began to do more research, I have had a difficult time with this. We were surprised in the delivery room with this and referred in the hospital to a respected pediatric orthopaedic surgeon. We like the doctor, but know there is a difference between likeing the doctor and what is best for your child. An uncle and two cousins of mine had a clubfoot and are fine now...you would never know...so you put your trust in the specialist, especially when it all seems so routine for him and we had been taking it all in stride. Knowing there are other options now makes me wish I had done my research ealier, before he was 4 months old. > > > > > > Can you please tell me if anyone else has been advised to stretch > >your > > > little one's feet. Guest guest
, from everything I've read, 4 months old is not too late to start the Ponseti treatment. Our experiences have all been very +ve. is 22 months old now and has treatment since 1 week after birth. He has had his hiccups but generally we get through. In fact often this is because our consultant hasn't followed Ponseti to the letter! I was lucky as we knew pre-birth. Had I not, I'd have been in a similar position to you as we'd have gone to our local consultant who only believes in operating. As Kori says, trust your instincts and fight for them. I have no doubt you are a great mum. Good luck with Dr Herzenberg. ps thanks very much for replying. > > > > > > > > Can you please tell me if anyone else has been advised to > stretch > > >your > > > > little one's feet. Guest guest
Thanks very much for all feedback so far. and Kori thanks for your Dr Dobbs info. We're UK based so a change could be tricky though if we had the money I wouldn't complain The exercise sheet is helpful but is 22 months now. I've been shown several times how to stretch his foot as I keep checking that I am doing it right as naturally his discomfort concerns me. Thanks for the reminder about the " broken foot " though I'd forgotten about this. I'll certainly try the high chair tomorrow

It is so great that you went on-line to do your own research when you had that niggling feeling that something wasn't right! We like to call it mommy instincts - they are amazing! Guest guest
My daughter's first doctor advised stretches between casting and twice daily while wearing the FAB. He also was not properly trained. I hated doing it because I am not a physical therapist and I really felt it was out of my scope. Then we switched to a Ponseti trained doctor and he said not to do the stretches, so we gladly stopped. Of course it hurts. It is no different than when we are stretching our muscles and go beyond the comfort level. Poor little ones! Poor mommy that has to be the one to cause pain to the little one. It must be breaking your heart. I know what you are going through, only my daughter couldn't tell me no, she just screamed. Hope you are able to get another opinion! > > Can you please tell me if anyone else has been advised to stretch your > little one's feet. Guest guest
We have stretches that we do for Maddie's feet. This was recommended by Dr. Herzenberg in Baltimore. He has a physical therapist that is now working with him. So, we stretch her feet about twice a day. Maddie also has " stiff hips " so we stretch them also. She does not fuss when we do the exercises, but I think that she is used to them now. Just a routine, after bathtime in the am and when we are getting jammies on in the pm. Only takes a few minutes. I should have mentioned that Maddie is only 4 months, so I can understand the complaints from a 22 month-er. Just wanted to let you know that others are recommending the stretches, good luck.
