Joy,

Hang in there.

Mom to 6-11-05 corrected BL CF P/M 22/7

On Thursday, Oct 13, we went to see Dr. Koop. Dr. Koop had short-leg casts

placed on Grant because of his one knee that needs to be exercised. The casts

were only left on until Monday, Oct 17, because we wanted to make sure Grant

wasn't getting blisters or sores. Since he doesn't have feeling from the knees

down due to the spina bifida, he wouldn't be able to tell us he was getting

sores.

On Monday, we returned for the cast removal. There has been some correction in

both feet, but more so in the right foot. Grant is now sporting a full-length

cast and a short cast. We want his left knee to be exercised due to how

inflexible it was at birth. We have seen some progress in the knee, but it

still likes to do its own thing. On Friday of next week, birth to three will

be coming out, and we'll be starting some therapy on his leg.

Here I thought I was prepared for the whole clubfoot thing, but it seems like a

different ballgame with the SB! I really want to run to Dr. Ponseti for

reassurance. Rose is due for an appointment, and I think I'll be making one

for her soon. Grant will be coming along. :)

So, we are onto weekly appointments for casting changes. I can't believe how

sad I was when they put Grant in his first casts, though. I really had a tough

time with his little " curly toes " (my 4yo's words for them) being put in

plaster. You'd think I would have been cool with it. I'm supposed to be an

old pro, right?! :)

Ah Joy,

Thanks for the update. I didn't post before but he's a beautiful

boy! You are very lucky to have him.

I think in general... plaster and babies don't mix well lol... a

little too hard and squishy at the same time :-D I totally

understand how it hurts the heart.

I would be interested in hearing what Dr. Ponseti says about his

feet/legs as well. Are they planning on any surgical correction on

his sb site? Can they improve things for him with that or not?

Joy,

I think it is natural, even if you have been through this all before

to have those feelings when they cast your tiny little baby, and maybe

even more so for Grant because you probably feel even more protective

of him due to the SB. Just keep your chin up and remember that his

little tootsies will be straight in no time. And you can always get

that second opinion from Dr. P anytime you go to IA with Rose.

Best wishes,

Thanks, Kori. :) He is pretty handsome if I say so myself. :)

I was taken by surprise! I just thought I had it all figured out. LOL Those

lil' feet are so soft and sweet, and now they're covered in clunky casts. I'm

getting used to them, I guess!

I did email Dr. Ponseti, but he hasn't emailed back yet. I look forward to

what he has to say.

Grant had the sb site closed at around 5 hours old!! He also had a shunt put

in after they were done closing the lesion. The closure won't improve things.

Basically, what damage is done is done. It is pretty certain he has no feeling

from the knees down, but we will learn more about his capabilities as he grows

and learns more. The kid has a lot of stuff he has to go through, but he seems

to be pretty cool with it so far. :)

Thanks, ! I think it's really hard because I'm not sure if it's going

to work, and I hate putting him through stuff. The casts bother me a lot more

than him!

Dr. Koop is very encouraging that we see Dr. Ponseti, so I just have to figure

out when we can!
