a,

I am pressed for time right now so won't be able to give you a long

response, but if you search the archives for my user name (jenandlivie) you

should be able to find some posts about my daughter's story.

Long story short....Olivia was released from the brace early, relapsed at

the major 2.5 yo growth spurt and had to be recasted. She went back into

the brace from 2.5 to 3.5 years old at 16 hours a day. She just turned 4

this past week and is still wearing her brace from 10-12 hours a day with no

end in sight.

Please, please don't let your doctor take your daughter out of the brace at

two. Believe me, you would much rather keep her in it now when she is used

to it and only does night time, than to have to deal with casts and 16 hours

on a walking child who hasn't worn a brace in a year.

Sofia may be lucky and not suffer a relapse, but the percentages are not

good. I'm sure they've been posted here before, but like I said, I'm

pressed for time. Hopefully, someone else can give you those percentages.

Or you could try searching for past posts about relapse.

Good Luck to you!

Brace after 2 years of age?

My daughter Sofia was born w/ 2 club feet. We had the casts till she

was 4 months old with the Tendectomy at 2 months.

Anyway, she has been in the DBB since she was 4 months old and at 9

months went to night time use only.

Our Dr, here in Kansas City, told me today that it all looks great.

Sofia is 1 1/2 and he thinks that she might be out of the brace by 2

years of age.

I know that up in Iowa they keep the children in the DBB till they are

3 years old or older.

I'm wondering what difference does it make to have them stay on the

brace till they are 3 or 4 years old?

Has anybody had their children's feet not keep the correction if they

went off the brace at 2 years of age?

My Dr uses the Ponsetti method, but he is not in the " Ponsetti List "

of Doctors.

Thank you very much

Dear a,

I am mother to Henry now aged three almost four and he was treated by a

certified Ponseti doctor and he was taken out of his brace at just over

a year, due to him being termed " loose limbed " . At the time Ponseti

was doing this himself to avoid over correction. However this has now

been revised as there have been many relapses. Henry did relapse at

around 2 and half on one foot only, the other has remained fine so I

suppose we got a 50% perfect correction with no further surgery. He had

an ATTT done in May and also his heel cord lengthened again. It was

very painful and distressing to him and us. If I could turn back to

clock and keep him in his boots I would and I think that it is better

for your daughter in the long term if she stays in her boots. It will

not actually harm her when you think about it, but only help.

I hope this is helpful.

I didn't read any other responses - so sorry if I'm being redundant.

We were told my Dr. Ponseti that right around 2 1/2 years of age, the

chance for relapse is very great. I think keeping your child in the

brace after 3 is decided upon as a case-by-case decision. Zach's foot

is doing very well, and I'm quite sure Dr. Ponseti would tell us that

because he was three this past July that we could take him out of the

DBB. I did email Dr. Ponseti and asked him if there are any negative

affects that could incur if we kept Zach in the DBB until 4 and he

said no. Since putting the DBB on every night isn't an ordeal at all

here, we've decided to keep him in it until he's 4 - at that time,

we'll take Zach to Iowa City to verify that all really is okay. This

is going to sound CRAZY - but part of me will feel some sense of

" loss " (that's not really the right word) to say goodbye to something

that has been a part of our lives for so long. I've even heard of

other children on here who had separation issues with their DBB. So,

for those of you who are at the beginning of this whole DBB journey -

it DOES get easier, and you might actually find yourself feeling odd

feelings about saying goodbye to it. (okay, it won't be TOO hard, but

there will be *some* emotion involved)

More than you wanted to know...

Holly :)
