Guest guest
Hi Michele, I had ultasounds almost every week in my doctors office. At my 18 week one, the technician looked at the screen for several minutes and then left the room. Shortly thereafter the doctor came in and told me Christian had clubfoot. He showed me exactly what he was talking about on the screen. It was clear as day. Good Luck! ? for those who found out via ultrasound Hey everyone, We didn't know about Collin's foot through the ultra sound and I was wondering if you found out through the regular ultra sound machine in the office or stronger ones they out sourced you too? I wasn't sure if you need a certain level machine to see it. With Collin I had several ultra sounds at the doctor's office, at places like labs, and also at the antinatal testing unit, specifically looking for birth defects, etc and no one saw his foot so I always wondered. We did have a feeling the one doctor saw it, by behavior but it was never told to us. But there had to be some reason or another they kept on sending us for extra ultrasounds, etc. Just wondering, I'm about 12 weeks pregnant now, and I want to try to have them look this time around specifically for clubfoot just so we have our game plan ready this time. Guest guest
Hi Michele~ Just to answer your question, we found out about Maddie's club feet via ultrasound. My OB does a new (but not standard) test called a nuchal translucency test that is performed between 12-16 weeks. This test requires a " better " sonogram machine. Specifically, one that uses Doppler (like the weather) technology. It is made by GE. It is* very* clear! Much better than the standard sono technology. They have it at the University of MD Medical Center, Center for Advance Fetal Care. Not too far from Dr. Herzenberg in Baltimore, 15 mins or so. A perinatologist found and diagnosed her immediately. FYI, they wanted to preform an amnio, which I agreed. Knowing what I know now, I would not have gotten the amnio. Once she was diagnosed, we continued to go there for follow up sonos, just to ensure that her legs were developing properly. I did have a " regular " sono toward the end of my pregnancy, and I could definitely notice the difference. If you can not get to U of MD after one of appointments, maybe you could call them and ask about the GE machine. Best of luck to you. BTW, I have sono pics if you are interested. Kim Mom to Maddie, BCF 06/16/2005. > > Hey everyone, We didn't know about Collin's foot through the ultra > sound and I was wondering if you found out through the regular ultra > sound machine in the office or stronger ones they out sourced you > too? Guest guest
We found out at 20 wks.It showed up quite clearly. It was also a regular machine.... a not-so-great machine actually. We had other ultrasounds later in which Gabe was hiding his tooties somewhere in my pelvic region (he was breach for the longest time). They couldn't even see his feet in the last two ultrasound that were done. They caught them quite clearly in the first though.Ponseti told us Gabe's deformity probably started very early(around 10-12 weeks), so it's likely they could have caught it even before the 20wk ultrasound. michele_and_collin wrote:Hey everyone, We didn't know about Collin's foot through the ultra sound and I was wondering if you found out through the regular ultra sound machine in the office or stronger ones they out sourced you too? Guest guest
We did find out during an ultrasound. However, a friend of mine has a child with a clubfoot and it was not seen during ultrasound. I would think it might be harder to notice if only one foot is affected since it would depend on position of the fetus as to how well the feet can be seen. (Just a guess on my part.) Thanks, Proud Mom to -DOB 7/4/03 undiagnosed syndrome: microcephaly, bilateral ptosis (corrected), bilateral clubfeet, undescended testes (corrected), GERD, low muscle tone, left kidney-hydronephrosis due to reflux, right kidney- reflux, cysts on upper 20%, small and low functioning, heart murmur, global developmental delays, sensory seeker, non-verbal (but knows a few signs) and a big snuggle-bug that is determined to do things. > > Hey everyone, We didn't know about Collin's foot through the ultra > sound and I was wondering if you found out through the regular ultra > sound machine in the office or stronger ones they out sourced you > too? Guest guest
Michele- The perinatologist found Kelsey's clubfoot on ultrasound on a level II ultrasound with a really clear machine. He saw it at 20 weeks and had us come back at 24 weeks to confirm and he was dead on that it was a left clubfoot. This ultrasound was being performed to look for markers of Downs syndrome as there as some question about whether or not Kelsey had this (she doesn't). Guest guest
We had the nuchal translucency test but it was not spotted then at all - she redated us and said the baby was 1 week 1 day bigger than my other date and yet he was born the day before my first date which I reckon was right all along!!!! It was spotted on our normal 21 week scan though. Rach Steve & Connor -- Re: ? for those who found out via ultrasound Hi Michele~ Just to answer your question, we found out about Maddie's club feet via ultrasound. Guest guest
Michele - Congrats on your pregnancy! Our first (Zach) was born with unilateral clubfoot. We found out at our 18 week u/s, which wasn't a level II u/s. The tech actually asked us " is there clubfoot in your family " ? Which absolutely freaked us out. We hadn't even heard the term used and had no idea what it was. At that time she brought in a doctor to confirm. When they showed us what they were looking at, it was absolutely obvious to us as well. They sent us for an echocardiogram after the diagnosis to rule out other abnormalities. With we asked to have a level II but they said it wasn't necessary - that the tech's would be able to tell with the routine u/s done at 18 weeks. The tech did not find c/f. I emailed Dr. Ponseti and he said that this couldn't be diagnostic until after 25 weeks. Thankfully, my OB requested another u/s at that time (couldn't be much after 25 weeks as they wouldn't be able to see what they need to see - baby would be too scrunched). At that time, the tech got a beautiful view of both STRAIGHT feet. We too could see that they were perfectly straight. Guest guest
Hi Michele, My ultrasound was done using a " level 2 " ultrasound. They saw the clubfoot right away. Even I could clearly see it. It was a much clearer ultrasound than the one I had at the doctor's office with my firstborn. > > Hey everyone, We didn't know about Collin's foot through the ultra > sound and I was wondering if you found out through the regular ultra > sound machine in the office or stronger ones they out sourced you > too? Guest guest
Our first u/s was the regular office u/s machine. wasn't very active in there so they were able to get an easy look at his feet when they were stationary. It was very obvious that they were clubbed. His legs crossed at the ankles and both feet curved inward. They saw it on subsequent u/s machines that were more sensitive as well. 11/19/04 ? for those who found out via ultrasound Hey everyone, We didn't know about Collin's foot through the ultra sound and I was wondering if you found out through the regular ultra sound machine in the office or stronger ones they out sourced you too? Guest guest
Of course nobody noticed 's bcf in u/s, but when I had an u/s for Everett (just a regular test) my dh and I could see the clubfeet on that. We were looking for it though since had it before him. I went for a Level 2 test and we could see them clearly in that one too. s. Re: ? for those who found out via ultrasound I had three ultrasounds - one at the lab and two in the OB's office - it was never detected. From what I understand they won't often look for it if there are no other signs there's something wrong (or no prior history in the family). One of the moms I met at the club foot clinic told me she only knew about her son's foot because they had found a cyst on his brain (which later disappeared) in her first ultrasound, so they looked around for other things. I'm wondering if they should just do routine screening for clubfoot since it is so common because at least that way you would know ahead of time. Had I known, I would have been able to do a lot of research beforehand and then could have chosen the doctor I wanted instead of being shuffled off to the first one and now four months later having to make a change because I'm not happy with the way things have gone. (Whew - run on sentence!) --- michele_and_collin wrote: --------------------------------- Hey everyone, We didn't know about Collin's foot through the ultra sound and I was wondering if you found out through the regular ultra sound machine in the office or stronger ones they out sourced you too? Guest guest
I had three u/s. The only one who found the BL CF with was the perinatalist. Since my triple marker test came back false/positive and I had the fibroid tumor he was looking very closely at every little thing. He spotted it right away. I could even tell until he pointed out things to us such as deminisons, bend of feet, etc.... He also used a very high level 2 ultsasound. I think the u/s techs aren't told to look for anything other than gender and get actual measurements. They really are qualified to do much observing or are they?
