During my 20w u/s they found that my little man has bilateral club

feet. We've decided to treat it with the Ponseti method. I'm starting

to register & am wondering if there are things I should keep in mind

that other moms might not think of.

Like, I don't think I'll need a tiny tub to bathe him in since he'll

been in casts up to 3 months & I imagine I'll be doing sponge baths.

Were there any unique challenges you faced in using car seats, swings,

clothing, etc as a result of the casts & shoes/bar? Anything I

should/should not register for because of the treatment he'll undergo?

Any advice (registery related or otherwise) is appreciated!

Thanks!

Welcome, ! And congrats on your pending arrival! :)

Depending on your bathroom/kitchen sink and counter situation, you

might still want a little tub- my kids use the little tub for quite

some time. My 6 month old (non-clubfoot) is still in it just

because I don't want to have to bend over the big tub to hold onto

her slippery little self to give her a bath! :)

Don't worry about specific outfits for the first 0-3 mo. sizes.

From 3-6 mo and maybe 6-9 mo. you will want outfits that have snaps

all the way around the legs without closed cuffs- these can be hard

to find sometimes. You can use any outfit with the brace except

those with built in feet/footies (the seams are too large to work in

the shoes) unless you don't mind taking a scissors and chopping them

off! =) So the regular footed sleepers are out once he's in the

brace.

The snaps around the legs just make it easier for diaper/clothing

changes, though closed legs will work too, you'll just have to take

the brace off and put it back on again.

For equipment, there aren't too many things to worry about except

that you'll want to avoid things (stroller, swing, high chair) with

a permanent bar or strap between the legs if possible. Typically,

you should be out of the the full-time brace wear before your little

one is really sitting up- so it hopefully won't be too much of an

issue for you....though for the highchair, even after you've

graduated to reduced hours, some moms prefer that the little one

wear the brace in the morning for a while after they get up, so

that's where that might effect you. You'll still get use out of

an " exersaucer " type toy or the johnny-jumper in the doorway if you

want one of those.

You're really not too limited except for the footed outfits.....and

you'll still get to use those during the casting stage because most

of them are cut large enough to fit over the cast.

I think I have some of this covered on my tips and tricks page on my

daughter's website: http://ponseticlubfoot.freeservers.com/

I hope this helps- we look forward to hearing about Declan's

arrival! Do you have a doctor picked out yet?

Enjoy your pregnancy!

Hi !

Welcome to the group and congrats on the upcoming birth!

The main things you should look for is clothing that is easy to manage

with casts and the brace. With casts, you can usually use footed

sleepers as they will fit over the cast. Once you move on to the

brace, you will want to look for non-footed sleepers that snap all the

way down the legs. If you have trouble finding them (sometime it is

hard), you can use sleep sacks or simply cut out the bottom of the

feet in footed sleepers (that's what I do). Depending on the exact

" model " of brace you get, it is sometimes very simple to remove the

bar from the shoes, dress the baby, and then put the bar back on.

As for other equipment, you will want to look for swings, highchairs,

etc. that don't have an immovable bar between the legs (like just leg

holes), but even these items can often be worked around if you can

remove the bar from the shoes, put the baby in, and then re-attach the

bar. Most car seats will accommodate the brace without any trouble,

some folks with fast growing little ones have found that the width of

the bar gets to be an issue with the traditional infant

carseat/carriers, but in my experience, my son outgrew his infant

carseat by being over 26 inches long, before this became an issue.

Also, with swings, we did have an issue that the seat was not very

deep and with my son being long, he was uncomfortable with the weight

of his cast pulling on his leg when it hung out the front of the

swing, we helped with this by putting a small rolled up blanket under

his leg to help prop it up.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure others will

chime in with other helpful things. Congrats again!
