The first 4 weeks after surgery I had some serious bathroom issues. Did I ever

not make it to the bathroom? No. My problem was that I had alot of bowel

movements. On my 5th week I woke up and I had one bowel movement a day. I am now

8 weeks post-op on average I have one bm per day, and my stools have firmed up

(sorry didnt mean to be graphic). I find that the DS has actually HELPED my IBS.

Before the surgery I was going to the bathroom all day long. And so far now even

with all the stress in my life I am still holding steady at one bm in the

morning or on the odd day a second bm at night. YMMV.

God's honest truth!! If you have ever known someone who is lactose

intolerant that describes the first few weeks. After the first few

weeks everything leveled out an now I can go up to two days without

having a bm. The nutritionist told me to ewat low fat because if I

didn't I would pay the consequences in the bathroom. Now I have had

a mild lactose intolerance for 7 years and I can tell that the

lactose reaction bm's pre-op were worse than my overly fat laden

bm's post-op. However post-op I have gone to full blown lactose

intolerance which I am learning to live with. Just means that I

don't feel guilty buying lots of steak. My bm's vary in length from

15 min to half an hour. I had Dinausaur BarbQ )best barbq in the

world, but 60% meat and 40% fat) two weeks ago and I had three intense

visits to the toilet overnight. I also didn't feel to hot the next

day. I cut back on my fat for awhile after that to give myslef a

break. Yes the bm's can be loose but they are not unctontrollable

and they will not cause you to have accidents. You know in advance

when you are going to have to go.

Everyone seems to react different in regards to bowel movements. I

had extreme diahrea around the clock. I would lose my bowels while

driving,at work, and in bed sound asleep. 10 to 20 times a day I was

on the toilet. I had many accidents and slept in depends. I was

terminated from my job of 11 years. This went on for 7 months.

I then discovered that I was only taking 1000 mg of calcium with

magnesium. I doubled my dose and the diahrea stopped. I now have firm

stools which are gray in color. If I miss a dose of calcium I will

have diahrea with out fail. I take 1000mg in the morning and 1000mg

in the late afternoon along with my other vitamins and minerals.

I do not regret anything about the DS. I look and feel better than I

ever have.

I want to preface this by saying that my situation is not the " norm. "

I had urgent BMs postop, but only once didn't make it to the bathroom

(that was my fault because I was sunk in a big huge club chair &

couldn't get up fast enough). Until ~5 weeks, I had ~4-6 BMs a day..

then it slowed up to 1-3 BMs in the am, then sometimes 1-2 in the

evening. Then at ~7-1/2 weeks out, I started having 10-12 BMs,

uncontrollable. No, I don't always make it to the bathroom. I thought

it was food poisoning to begin with, because except for no vomiting,

it felt just like food poisoning. I've had multiple extensive tests,

but nothing shows up. Because of those 2 glorious weeks between weeks

5 and 7, I really don't feel that my troubles are due directly to my

DS. If it were, I would be able to use all the products that have

worked for others with this problem and it would work. I am not giving

up, and even going through all I've been through, I would do this over

in a heartbeat.

This IS forever.. but its your decision, and I support you in it..

just please don't think that most folks are like me.. because they are

not.

Hugs,

Liane

Congrats, Lisbeth! This is the biggest obstacle for

me - having loose bowels, embarassing myself

especially in public. Thank you for being so graphic

- I think alot of people want to know!

Someone mentioned fissures being a possiblity - I had

one and had surgery for it... it was the most painful

operation I ever had. I don't want this! I hope the

doc provides info as to how to avoid this.

p.s. What does YMMV stand for?

Believe me Dee, I understand my job requires me to be out and about all the

time and the last thing I can deal with is with uncontrallable bm's. Please stay

on the list there are different treatments for diahrea that have helped list

members. Best of luck to you. And let us know how it turns out
