My son Jude is currently 8 months old and in his DBB for nights and

naps. About three weeks ago he learned to pull himself up on anything

and everything. The problem is during the night when he wakes up about

every hour and pulls himself up in his crib and can't figure out how

to get back down with his boots on. He has no problem when the DBB's

are off but all night long we are going into his room and laying him

back down (8 times last night!) I almost chucked the shoes out the

window, I am seriously sleep deprived. Has anyone had a similar

experience? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks,

Kate

Actually, it does sound familiar to me, but not with my clubfoot kid. My

older son (not clubfoot) went through a phase where he did the same thing.

He figured out how to get himself to standing, but then was too chicken to

get back down. It lasted about two weeks and then he was able to figure it

out. It was a rough month of going into his room several times a night to

lay him back down, but he did figure it out. Our doctor said we should be

happy that he learned his new skill of pulling up and that he was just

practicing. Sounded good in his office, but after about the 6th time of

getting awoken in the middle of the night, I wasn't quite so proud anymore!

LOL

My clubfoot kid is the more daring of the two. She was and is never afraid

to do anything. She figured out how to pull herself up in her FAB and when

she wanted down, she just plopped herself down.

In our experience at least, this had nothing to do with the FAB, but rather,

the temperment of the child. I'm sure Jude will figure out how to get down

soon, but in the meantime much sympathy for all the night waking!!

Kate,

We never had this problem as Jonah was still in the FAB full-time (got a late

start with the Ponseti method) when he learned to pull to stand. However, I do

know that to get back to the ground (or matress) he'll either let himself just

drop onto his butt in a sitting position or he'll put one hand and one knee on

the floor and drop to a crawling position. It's not too much different, though

it's more awkward and he has to be more cautious, from when he's not wearing the

FAB.

It seems to me that one thing you could do is to teach Jude how to get back

down. Put his FAB on him sometime during the day when he's being pretty active

and have him practice pulling up on things and then going back to the floor.

I've noticed that Jonah is much more at ease in the FAB at night if I have him

wear it and move around some in it during waking hours. It's like he' needs to

be used to the sensations of having it on in order to not be alarmed by it at

night.

A concern at night would be that if he gets up and plops back down, he will not

be able to get his covers back on. Does he sleep in a sleepsack? Many of us

here have found that they eliminate the need for extra covers altogether and

solve the problem of the FAB getting tangled in blankets and waking our children

up. Is the frequent night-waking a new thing, or is this something that has

been going on for a long time only now he's getting stuck standing up?

Hope this helps some,

Naomi
