Guest guest
Hello, I'm new here and I'm so glad I found this site. My question is has anyone found shoes that are custom sized? My daughter has just finished her castings and was finally wearing the Dennis Brown bar...the problem is she is so little her feet kept slipping out of her size 0 shoe. My Dr. put casts back on until we can figure out how to get the right size shoes. I found a site in Germany that makes a different version of the DB bar but can't seem to contact them. Any information or help would be much appriciated. Thanks! Kate

Guest guest
Kate, The traditional shoes for the bar are made by the Markell shoe company and they come in sizes as small as 0000. If you can't get these from the local orthotics company that gave you the size 0, you should be able to order them directly from Markell shoe www.markellshoe.com It looks like their website is down right now (unless it is just me), but they should be able to help you. > > Hello, > I'm new here and I'm so glad I found this site. Guest guest
Yep- and they have a shoe size chart that you can print off so you can see what size(s) you think the orthotists should be ordering. And make sure you're getting the latest style- not the old stock that's been sitting on the shelf for years! Welcome to our group! & > > Kate, > The traditional shoes for the bar are made by the Markell shoe company > and they come in sizes as small as 0000. Guest guest
You can also, at a greater expense than the normal Markell, order custom made shoes and a lighter bar from . Guest guest
Dear Kate, We make the shoes as small as 0000, which usually fit the youngest babies and premies quite well. There is no reason to stay with a size 0 if it is too big. Save it for later. Let me know if you have any trouble getting the right size. Jay Markell Markell Shoe Co. info@... Guest guest
We jave used the Markell shoes, size 000, which my now four month old could not wear, and have moved into the Micthell's. The 's are custom made, very soft leather. Remind me of Birkenstock sandal material and the bar is so much lighter it is unbelievable. I would encourage you visit the www.mdorthopaedics.com and check with your insurance about coverage. Usually it is in the durable medical equipment section of yoru benefit booklet. What insurance do you have? There are plenty of parents on this site with experiences with so many insurances we would be happy to help you in any way possible. Me included! Thanks, B wrote: You can also, at a greater expense than the normal Markell, order custom made shoes and a lighter bar from . His website is www.mdorthopaedics.com. Guest guest
I have looked into the s shoes and have ordered the impression kit. I have HealthNet insurance (CA) and have asked our Dr to write a letter of recommendation for the custom shoes. How has your child responded to the shoes and how many times have you had to replace them due to growth? With the Markell shoes I have seen wear marks on my little ones heal and don't want to hurt her. Are the shoes easier to use?? My Dr says most relapses are because of the parents not putting the shoes on. After all we have been thru I really don't want to have her relapse. I think even if our insurance doesn't cover the shoes I'll get them anyway. Thanks for the info. Guest guest
You might also need a prescription written by this same doctor for a Ponseti clubfoot abduction brace with custom shoes (Ponseti AFO). Our insurance required, a letter of medical neccess., wriitten prescription that also noted a usage of lifetime necess. to maintain correction in refill line, an invoice from and a claim form that you will have to fill out. The invoice from will have all the infortmation you will need to fill out the medical codes and cost on the claim form. It is better to provide this all up front when filing the claim so they don't have a excuse to delay payment to you. Our insurance at least paid a little more than half of the cost so we are out of pocket some but it has been worth every penny. My son has responded GREAT! He is such a happy guy now. Life is so different since we got the custom shoes. They are easy to put on, once you get the hang of, so much lighter in weight than the others. I can't say enough. WE ALL LOVE THEM. Note: we have had them for two weeks but we have accomplished more time in shoes in those two weeks then we did fighting the others for over a month. We haven't replaced them yet with the next size. Dr Ponseti told us this 3-6 months wear at first is what we can expect per size. Basically once his toes hang off the shoe then we need to replace with the next size. One thing too, the bar on these are adjustable so you can adjust as your child grows. The other bar Dennis Brown Bar (gold one) does not and you have to be exact in measurements or the shoes will hurt the child and in turn purchase another bar. had horrible marks on his heels and foot from the Markell shoes. He doesn't have those problems with the Ponseti/'s. Difference, 's are custom to your child's foot and made for comfort. Relapses do happen when shoes are not on properly or parent's don't keep their children in the shoes, HOWEVER, if a child is not corrected to begin with, then it is the DOCTOR's fault, and not yours. I think sometimes they don't want to admit fault in treatment but it happens. That happened with and Dr. Ponseti confirmed it. I have walked in your shoes and know anything can happen at anytime, right now things are going great, his feet look marvelous and we have no reason to worry about relaspe at this time. The stress has been removed from my baby, my marriage, everything. Thank goodness. I think enough tears were shed to fill an ocean. Hang in there, don't take the blame..... Can you email Dr. Ponsti some pics for his advice? We are here to help you don't hesitate to email me directly amakared@....
