Caden goes to a daycare that is for special needs kids, but accepts regulars needs kids too. We have had to battle some issues with them, so this is a great topic for me. One things that's made us the madest is that the nursery is "licensed" for 8 babies, but we were told when we took Caden there that there would never be more than 5 in there. Well, a new lady took over and there is 8 babies in there now. There isn't room for 5 babies and all they require, much less 8!! So, make sure there is extra room in each classroom/nursery for equipment. Please make sure there are extra workers too. They told us, of course, that 1 worker could have a 5:1 ratio, but that should be different for special needs kids. It needs to be more like 2:1 depending on the problems the kids face. Our daycare has a "Snoozle Room" that has lots of fiber optic stuff, a bubble tower that turns colors, lots of different ligths, and such. They are expensive, but there are places to get grants for them. Make sure there is room in the classrooms, or a "great" room for therapists to come and work with the kids. Nurses on staff are great too!! Make sure, of course, that the workers are VERY patient! Have lots of "special needs" playground equipment and therapy equipment too.

We only pay $115 a week, which is about the average for any daycare in town! Actually since Caden turned 1, we pay only $110 a week, but we would pay LOTS more for a place like this. What a great thing you are doing for the kids and their families that need good care. Here is a link to our daycare and the Mosaic foundation. Maybe it will help! Good luck!

It sounds like your facility will be even better than ours! Wish I could bring Caden there!

Daycare for special Needs Children

Hi this is , Hailee's Mom..My other half and i are getting ready to open a center where we live for children with special needs, there really are no daycare centers that take children with disablilities and health problems, the public schools have preschool centers, and we have an autistic center, and two daycare centers that take special needs children but they have a waiting list becuase they filled up with non special needs children.Ours will be staffed wtih a Physician Assistant and a few Medical Assistants, and on RN so we can take children with trachs and other problems...What i would like from everyone in the group was if you could send me emails as to what you would like/expect from a center if you were going to take you children to it.. What would you look for? what would turn you off.. What is a fair price to charge for childcare.??I have found the building now we are on the quest for money, wish us luck.. and Haileein Sunny AZPlease contact mito-owner with any problems or questions.

It sounds great hearing someone who wants to open a place for our special

kids and to ask others' opinions as to what they would like to see. I stay

home with the kids so haven't needed day care but know the most important

things I would want to see is ability and knowledge about my child's

specific medical needs, friendly/cheerful staff, a staff who is willing to

really listen to the parents and communicate with them, a safe environment

and plenty of staff, etc. I think lots on the group have given you great

specific desires and I am sure it will really help you. Best wishes for the

center. :)
