I know every Kaiser is different, but

can someone tell me approximately how many calories a day we are suppose

to be taking in on Stage 3? I know I am usually not even getting

in 300 calories a day...and I sure know my protein intake is quite low,

but of course I am at Richmond and cannot take protein shakes....

I am not hungry yet (am 8 weeks out)

but just want to make sure I am not forcing my body into starvation mode....

Thanks,

Pam

Pam:

This is a question best suited for the program dietician. This one

varies so much from patient to patient, ESPECIALLY in the early

stages, that it's best to get an answer that is specific to you.

Follow the guidelines. In the early stages, the weight will come off

if you do what the program calls for. If I remember from my early

post-op stages, the emphasis was not on overall calorie count

(because you just can't eat that much) but on getting your water in,

taking your supplements and making sure you're active.

As you get further along, and can eat more " normally " or

rather " fully, " you can count calories and make sure you're not

taking in too much or too little.

Best of luck to you at this stage. I know it all seems confusing and

uncertain, but stick to what the binder says (and your dietician/case

manager) and you'll be fine.

Please keep us updated on your progress!

Pam--I have heard about some Richmond patients who " get away " with

using protein shakes/supplements.

IMHO--if you can get some samples of protein powders and try them

and they make you feel better, why not use them? Maybe you can get

a bottle of Isopure, it's a liquid protein drink that gives 20 grams

protein per bottle.

Of course, I'm a big advocate of the protein shakes, my favorite is

Pro Complex chocolate.

But, ultimately, it is up to you to decide.

As far as how many calories you should be consuming, that's really a

question for Richmond's dietitian or doctors, I guess.
