Guest guest
The PM's are bent too, just at the ends of the bar itself and the bar fits into the small sole at the heel flat so they end up pretty flat. I do like them. But I never worried about Darbi walking in her Markells either. We had both the gold and the red bar while she wore them and both of them acted much the same as far as tippyness. But she stood and walked around behind furniture and on the furniture and on a whole lot of other things in them just fine! I prefer the PM's for this reason but she was perfectly steady in the others too. In fact, her balance is pretty darn good for her age! She stands on so many things (including us!) and holds her hands out to the side balancing... she thinks it's all a big game. Guest guest
She's 2.5yo and has been wearing her brace 12-14hr/d since she was about 13 mo's old. She walked at 10 mo's while wearing the brace 16-18hr/d even! I plan on her going till at least 3yo and most likely 3.5 just to be safe. Many children are wearing it till 4 or perhaps even older now because there have been some relapses seen that made Dr. Ponseti change the brace wear requirements a bit. 3-1/2 - 4yo is the standard right now with 4 being the minimim for most babes with feet that were more severe than mild. Since he's so old and pretty much just getting started back on track now I would think he'd be in the longer wear range. It'd certainly want to go to that age if it were my child. It depends on severity and how he's responded to treatment over the whole duration of the bracing. They'll decide how long he stays in it probably at a later date but I'd hazard a guess you're in for the 4y range. It sounds like a long time but it really does go fast and it's so worth it! You've seen first hand what a wonderful thing this method is as compared to other treatments... just stick with it and you'll do fine. It'll be over before you know it! Oh, you may not have realized this but today was the very first time she ever did that (although I have been encouraging it recently because the older boy's school has carpet and we can practice a bit in the am). So that means that she's been mostly crawling around in her brace up till today. She crawls everywhere. Sometimes I don't get how she gets into some spots! She's perfectly happy doing so. Sure she's happy when I let her out of the shoes, but she's totally fine crawling about the house and doesn't complain. I think this is due in part (much due to actually...) to her being braced the long hours for so long already. That sure helps when you reduce... they view it as a little freedom rather than not enough freedom if you know what I mean. She's so used to it that she has nothing else to judge her experiences by and accepts that she must wear her shoes till mama says she can have them off. I know it helped when she was younger, 1yo's can be testy at times with sleep and all. She never once complained at that age. She asks for them off now, but when I tell her no she understands. Very unlike when I tell her no for other things! hahaha! Kori Kori At 07:49 PM 10/4/2005, you wrote: >That is awesome! And very encouraging! Guest guest
i think all these bars are straight initially and the orthotist bends them when you get them fitted. So theoretically they all could be bent at each end only. Ours always were but they still could have been put the bend further out. I've seen some of the bars actually rounded to achieve the dorsiflexion or bent at the center like a V even. Quite honestly, what they're thinking doing that over making a nice flat area for the child to stand in is beyond my comprehension. Sometimes I wonder what some of these orthotists are thinking when they come up with some of these wacky ways to set up the FAB. I am positive that the standard gold bars come straight, and from the pics from Markell's website of the adjustable gold bar they too are straight and need bending. Although I could be wrong having not actually seen one personally. If you want the bends to be closer to the shoes you should ask the orthotists to do it that way for you, hopefully they don't throw fits lol~! Guest guest
The bar is bent at 10 degrees at each tip, to tip the toes up correctly, but otherwise the bar is flat. s. Re: Re: Walking in Mercell vs shoes So I don't think the P/M's come bent either (unless there's something I'm missing). Our orthotics folks won't bend the bar. I asked, they refused, and then I just tried to stopped worrying about it since Lily's dorsiflexion is still so fantastic (better than on her non-cf). But this email discussion has me worried again. Why doesn't bend them? How handy do you have to be to do it yourself? Kim Naomi wrote: The gold bars (both the adjustable and the non-adjustable) most certainly do come from the manufacturer/distributor perfectly flat. We've wound up having to bend 2 of Jonah's bars ourselves (one time as the result of the orthotist throwing a real fit about us insisting on having a longer bar than *he* thought Jonah needed. Like he's the one who has to listen to the kid cry and tell us his legs are hurting. Anyway.). Good thing my DH is so handy. Jonah's first bar--gold, non-adjustable--had a curving bend in the middle which was very unstable for standing on. Since then, we have made sure that we get the bends at each end so that he has a flat surface to stand on. I've recently seen several pictures of children in bars that were not bent at all. Oops. Including one where the parents were worried about their son loosing dorsiflexion. You mean there's a reason these things are set up the way they are??? OK, OK. Enough from me. Guest guest
You're welcome - it's not that I'm a know it all, I just remember long ago when I got my first shoes/bar there was this whole discussion. I thought the bar was flat too and someone pointed it out to me and then I noticed. I don't know about the hole in the tongue, is it to slip the middle strap through? s. Thanks for correcting me, ee! Looking at Lily's bar, I don't even notice this. But 10 degrees isn't that much, so I suppose it's there.
Guest guest
I wonder if other baby birth defect support sites are like ours - where we know as much or more than a lot of the doctors. Just remember I came to this site an ignorant mother with a messed up kid as did we all. After five years I still continue to learn here all the time. s. Re: Re: Walking in Mercell vs shoes I was hoping I was wrong about the P/M bar not being bent & that someone would correct me! So I was happy to see your email, ee!! (sorry if my response sounded otherwise) The hole in the tongue is about the same size as the holes in the straps for the buckle. Not sure if it's supposed to be a center marker, or there to help us line up the tongue with the strap, or something .... When I first saw it I thought that or Todd must have inadvertently punched through it when punching the straps. But then I noticed it was that way on both shoes & figured out that it was intentional. Anyway, I'm constantly reminded how blessed Lily is that her mama has all of you veteran cf moms to run to with questions. Thanks to all of you who take time out to help us!! Don't know where we'd be without out you. Funny, our doc is always asking me questions re. the correct Ponseti protocol because he knows all of you keep me up to speed. He's on Ponseti's list & still all of you seem to be his most up-to-date source of info. Guest guest
told me last night that he puts the glue on these new shoes with the rivets to hold it in place while they put the rivets in. I wonder if the hole is for positioning during assembly as well? More about my talk with later. Was a good one.
