Guest guest
We have an appointment to take Brenden our 16 month old to see a Shriners doctor (just for another opinion). Does anyone know anything about the Shriners?? Will this be a waste of time? I just feel like I need to talk to everyone that is out there regarding treatment for CF. Until I came to this site, I didn't know what I didn't know and now I know so much more now that I am connected with all of you! Thank God for all of you. Brenden has been through the ponseti castings and is now in the Mercells (3 weeks) and we are thrilled with his progress. And we are completely convinced that his foot is getting corrected because of the Ponseti method.

Guest guest
I think you mentioned in a earlier message that you were going in for another opinion at the Shriner's hospital in Chicago. I have not heard anything to the effect that they are using the Ponseti method there, though it's certainly not impossible that they are. It's always good to hear from other doctors that your child's foot is perfectly corrected. And if they aren't using the Ponseti method, who knows, seeing your son's awesome feet might convince them to look into it. As far as the Shriner's in general, if I ever win the lottery, they are getting a wad of cash from me! My son, Jonah, is treated at the Shriner's in Sacramento, CA. All care is provided entirely free of charge, including any xrays, shoes, braces and so on. Here is a link to a terrific checklist for parents to help verify whether or not a doctor is following the Ponseti protocol. Check out the rest of the site as well, there's a ton of information there! http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil//id13.html Keep us posted! Guest guest
Jodi- I'm glad you're making the effort to get a second opinion just to ease your mind! Good for you! Which Shriners hospital in particular? Also which doctor at that Shriners? Unfortunately, we can't lump all Shriners hospitals into one group, nor can we lump all the doctors who practice at Shriners into one group! Case in point- the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis has Dr. Dobbs who is one of the most experienced Ponseti doctors in the country- but other doctors in that ped ortho group at the same hospital aren't necessarily following the Ponseti protocol correctly. Your best bet is to get the name of a specific doctor off of Dr. Ponseti's list- and/or get a recommendation from other families here on the board- and use that " parents' checklist " to interview them. You have to treat the Shriner hospital like any other institution......when it comes right down to it- it's the individual doctor that matters, not the building that they practice in..... Do you mind sharing with us who Brenden's current doctor is (if you haven't already- sorry if I missed that!)? I hope this helps!!!! & (3-16-00, left clubfoot) http://ponseticlubfoot.freeservers.com/

Guest guest
, Our doctor is Dr. Mooney out of Detroit Childrens Hospital. We are so thankful that we found him. Brenden's foot is doing great. The bad news is that Dr Mooney is moving to South Carolina, so we will either need to go with his partner (who also practices Ponseti method and recommended by another Mom in the area ...Dr. Mendelow is his name) or travel to SC for appointments. We will be going to the Shriners hospital in Chicago. Jodi Brenden 5/28/04 Left Club foot > > Jodi- > I'm glad you're making the effort to get a second opinion just to > ease your mind! Guest guest
Jodi, In reading posts on the various clubfoot boards over the past 5+ years, I haven't read of one doctor in the Chicago area that is being " true " to the Ponseti method. Have you thought about going to the doctor in Grand Rapids (Dr. ) for the second opinion? Otherwise, maybe go all the way to Iowa City- (it's a few hours further than Chicago)?? Has the Chicago Shriners told you if they're using the method or not? Do you know what doctor Brenden is supposed to see? Keep us posted! & (3-16-00, left clubfoot)
Guest guest
I think Dr. Ponseti mentioned that they are using the method at the Chicago Shriner's now. Use the link that Naomi provided for the list of questions to ask the doctor -- this will tell you what you need to know when you talk to them. Guest guest
Really? Do you know where this hopsital is at? There's a Shriners on Oak Park Avenue, just south of Grand Avenue and it's not far from my house. I would be willing to meet with any parent that came in and had questions. I'm about 10 minutes from there. Jennipher wrote: I think Dr. Ponseti mentioned that they are using the method at the Chicago Shriner's now. Guest guest
I just am not sure, I think it was on Saturday morning at the very end of the symposium I asked Dr. P to say something to the docs about getting on the " certified " list. He was saying that there are lots of people practicing the method who are not necessarily on the list and he mentioned two places in Chicago, I think one was Shriner's but I'm just not sure. If we can get ahold of the video of the symposium I can find where he talked about it. > > > > > > We have an appointment to take Brenden our 16 month old to see a > > > Shriners doctor (just for another opinion).
