Im sorry to hear the bad news. If this was me, as much as I would prefer

the DS I would definatley go for the RNY becuz that would be so much better

than living the way I was before. It doesnt necessarily mean life would be

miserable with the RNY.....not necessarily mean that you would regain

either! It doesnt happen with everyone, you know. I think you would be a

little more diligent in making sure it would work for you. I definatley

would do that rather than one more diet I know I would fail at!

Just my 2 cents but I back you all the way on whatever you decide to

do.......!!!

Personally I would NOT go for the RNY under ANY circumstances... unless I was

at death's door and it was the only option that would save me! I think the

lap band is a more viable option to the RNY and MUCH less invasive... One

does not have to have one's stomach cut in two and have a small pouch with a

stoma...

I know there are post-ops who are very happy with their RNY and don't

experience severe complications. That's great that their surgery worked for

them. But, there AREN'T just two options anymore... there's another surgery

that's rather new - the adjustable lap band. I think the overall weight

loss is about 60 PCT (as compared to the average 80 PCT for the DS), but I

think that's comparable if not better than the RNY! :):)

I only know of two surgeons who perform this surgery in NYC

(Laparoscopically, no less): Dr. Ren at NYU and another surgeon at Lennox

Hill Hospital. I think there's someone in Seattle and another person on the

East Coast... Perhaps there are even more surgeons. I know there's a

'bandster' group on yahoo, too. Perhaps anyone who cannot get the DS can

hook up with them, get real stories of their recovery, etc. and get info on

this new option.

I would definately choose the DS HANDS DOWN anyday and the malapsorption

factor is what appealed to me, although I recognize it's potential problems.

But, If I couldn't get the DS, I would NOT go for the RNY when another

surgery has a similar weight loss/maintenance rate and is much less

invasive...

all the best,
