In general, I think the less conservative surgeons are more comfortable in the bmi 45 and up range, but I have known QUITE A FEW people with lower bmis (in the low 40's and even under 40) who have had the DS performed here in NYC (with Dr. Gagner and Dr. Ren). So, it certainly isn't impossible. I think they may adjust and make the common channel a little longer than 100 cm or leave it at 100 cm.... nothing shorter. I think the important factor is that you are educated about the surgery. There are many experienced surgeons here in NYC (and I've heard of quite a few in CA and also in between). I would write them first to see their 'take on things' but certainly speak with a qualified and experienced DS surgeon first. I'm so glad you walked out of the other surgeon's office! all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt. Guest guest
Franli The oil spill affect, is for a few who after DS their bodies don't absorb fats--so the stool has actual oil globules in it. FOr most this goes away and the oil mixes with the stool. But for poor Steve--he has to wear a maxi pad to catch erroneous leaks otherwise his clothes are stained orange. This isn't a side affect that is common--or as severe as Steve's. Hope this explains it. Guest guest
another question or ?????'s > Thanks everyone for the sugar information. I can see that this research > will take some time. But you all sure have my attention about the DS vs > RNY. > > This one is sort of stupid I think but if your surgery is covered but you > have to go out of state to get it are any of those expenses covered? I didnt look into that but I do know if you are on medicaid they do pay your expenses and that includes airfaire and motel and food etc!! Even for pre opt testing or whatever before the surgery! > > There are no surgeons listed for Colorado so I might not even get to > choose the DS. No DS surgeons in the state of Idaho where Im from either.....we traveled to Portland, Oregon to get it done. Would do that again to get the very best there is to offer! I have a friend in Fort and she settled for the RNY and regrets it to this day..... > > I am a 40/41 BMI depending on the days weight. Does this make getting the > DS harder? My BMI was 42.......I had no problems! > > Ok, will someone bottom line me with the oil spill effect???? What are you > all really talking about even though you joke. Is the body odor really > problem? The oil spill effect is when you overload your system with fats and then you let wind and an orange slick covers your underwear and sometimes you are not even aware of it......just make sure you are not wearing white lol......actually, the first time it happens to you, you learn to not do it unless you are in the bathroom or you make sure you wear a maxi pad....... It only happened to me once......happened to hubby.....ummmmm I think 3 times and hes still learning! As far as the oder goes.....I dont have any problems but Mike does occasionally. And he eats alot more carbs and sugar than I do so that is a major reason why. The bacteria (bad) feeds off the carbs and sugar and multiply like crazy creating the smell. But it can be controlled and Flagyl can really be of help here. I would still do the surgery even if they smelled so bad I would drive everyone away! To be thinner and healthy is a great trade off..... Judie
