I would reply...well you can think its the easy way out...but I saw it as the

permanent way out..... It seems like other overweight people have a hard

time with it when someone really starts to lose...

,

I understand that this was not easy for you. I had a very smooth recovery.

The first month was really nasty. Also it was a very emotional time making

the decision and having surgery. However, now that I am a year out. I can

tell you that at this point it is easier than any diet I ever was on. Diets

were always pure torture (mentally and physically) for me. I guess what I am

saying here is even if it was (and it isn't) the easy way out. Doesn't that

make us smart. Hasn't anyone ever heard of working smarter, not harder!!

Just my thoughts!

Yeah, that guy probably wishes he had the nerve to go through with surgery.

Even if it were the easy way out, why would anybody intentionally take the

hard way? I quit smoking in 1989 as I lay unconscious in ICU from the result

of a very serious illness. Years later my sister told me that I had quit

smoking the easy way. HUH? Years after that she denied ever saying that (when

she came to her senses!). I think if anyone I'm not close to asks me, I'm

just going to say " I'm eating much less. " Not a lie! Congrats on your 49! Wow!

Good for you ! surgery was not the easy way

out... that's an addict's mentality, or at least

someone stuck in the problem (my opinion)...for

many of us WLS was the SMART way out and in many

cases only part of the picture...I have lost

about 82 pounds since Apr 2, and the biggest

changes may have been with my mental

health...people say my personality has

changed...I feel like I have blossomed, I could

never have envisioned the opportunities I feel

that are open to me now, because of physical and

attitude changes...I go the gym 4 times a week

with a trainer now! Last week was my first week,

I got up at 6am to meet him for 7am two of those

days, I work at night, I have turned my days

around. I feel like I have a life....I am living

my life.

I also have put into place a practice regarding

food that I could not, did not and was unable to

do pre-surgery, no matter how many structured

diet plans and unstructed diets I participated

in.

LIVING LIFE with all of its opportunities and

trials and putting myself on the front line of

experiences with people and interests and new

activities is not the easy way out. The easy way

out FOR ME was to sit in front of the TV, eat two

bags of various chips with various dips, eat an

abundance of ice cream and sugar and then feel

very sedated; I found most of my friends living

in sit com worlds and now I am meeting new people

and even dating....TRUST ME, it's not easy, IT'S

BETTER, but it's not easier.

AND finally, I wouldn't have it any other way for

me!!

have a great one

Oh , I'm so sorry for you. No offense, but some

friend! Did he know about your post op complications?

As respects weight loss, I don't think there IS an

" easy way out " . Dieting certainly isn't easy and

surgery is really hard to have the courage to do.

Heck, for alot of people being thin isn't easy.

Perhaps he was a tad bit jealous of you...?

Take care,

dee

I'm really sorry that happened to you. Some people just don't get

it...and maybe never will. :(

I guess we, as a society, should be grateful for the state of

medicine to have advanced so far that people think it is easy to

have major surgery! Sheesh! I *know* I'm gonna hear that

same remark from some people if I ever do decide to tell them.

Of course, the people in question are usually of normal weight

and have never had to lose anything more than the 5lb holiday

weight.

I've also heard stories that other obese people react

negatively to fellow obese people losing weight. I know I got that

when I lost a lot of weight quickly a few years ago. One woman

at work who has been in Weight Watchers for years was kind of

stand-offish to me, not mean, but...she all of a sudden didn't

want to talk to me, even in the most civil, non-work-related way.

Jealousy have been part of it, but that's really not the right word.

Now that I've gained all the weight back, she's much more

friendly to me. Go figure.

Hi -

The difference between the two of you is the fact that your 49# are

gone forever and that is only the beginning. When he sees what

happens with you, his attitude may change. Look at it as an effort

to educate that may not bear fruit for some time.

If we are afraid to let people know about this surgery, they will

never have the chance to benefit from it themselves. I haven't had

the surgery yet but I let every MO person I see know about it. If

they think something is inappropriate, let them see how my weight

plummets and stays plummetted.

As far as his reaction is concerned, Freud had a term for it. I

think it was called some kind of envy. LOL

Well, I'm not the only one! I had a friend tell me, well I'm losing

weight without any surgery so stop feeling sorry for myself! I had

called her to tell her that I was feeling bad after my surgery that I

just had August 13.

This surgery is the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life.

Physically and emotionally it has been a strain on me and it's hard

for others to understand. " The easy way out? " Hardly.

Just hang in there and don't listen to the ignorance of others. But I

agree with you, I think I'll keep my mouth shut about the surgery

with certain people, too- who needs the stress?

First, your friend is jealous. He's going to get more jealous as you lose

more weight and keep it off!

Second, it's seen as the " easy way out " because this society feels like fat

people should suffer for being fat. Fat is a character flaw, you see.

People need to go back to 1st grade to learn that " if you can't say

something nice, say nothing at all! "
