Dr. Baltazar is the greatest. I'm of course prejudice as we all are towards our

surgeons but this man was not only compassionate and kind to me besides doing an

excellent job on my surgery but he held my hand as I laid on the operating

table, trembling, telling me as they did things...it was incredible.

Spain is very hot and humid. It was very different too. The streets are narrow

and Alcoy is a very old town. The clinica was old but clean and the nursing

staff was A+. The nurses didn't speak much english but we sure had alot of fun

and laughs trying to communicate. I was well taken care of and the one thing

that stood out is they are very behind the times...LOL They still use the glass

bottle iv bottles, old fashioned enema, etc. Yet I had a chest xray and they

were able to deal with anything that comes up. I heard that Dr. B. is wanting

or planning to convert completely to the surgeries at the clinica and they are

going to update and upgrade in the next year or so.

My surgery was only 110 minutes. I had my tubes tied, gallbladder/appendix out

and he removed about 80% of my stomach and left me with a 65cm common channel.

We all were done a bit different of the four of us that were done the week I was

there and so I can see he does it to the patient's needs while 75cm is his

common choice.

I saw him 3 times a day every day I was there and I did really well. Never

threw up...no problems. Was up the night of surgery and walking the next day.

I had my stitches half removed on the 4th day and the rest on the 5th day and

also my drains removed. That was a very strange feeling...by the time you

thought..hey that sorta hurts it was over...LOL. I am almost completely healed

on the outside and everything is looking good. My incision is horizontal and

starts about 2 inches to the right of the center of my body and around to the

left side.

So...I was released from the clinica on the 5th day and spent the last week in

Alicante in a hotel. Our room had a view of the Med. Sea so that wasnt so bad.

We had live concerts across the street almost every night and the final night

there there were fireworks right on top of the hotel! I'll post some pics on my

website soon so you can see some of the area and I got a great shot of Dr. B. I

just loved him!

So did I forget anything...got anything you want to know? Ask away!

Oh...coming home was very difficult. I couldnt get help so I ended up walking

all the airports...all 5 of them...LOL

AJ,

Thanks so much for sharing your story. Sounds like the ideal

experience, an uneventful surgery! We were all keeping you in our

prayers.

As for the airports, I have been fighting a bumm knee since October...

(knee replacement surgery scheduled for 2 weeks) and have had to do

some extensive travelling for work. I notified the airlines, and

they have met me at every gate with a wheelchair. The unfortunate

part is that a couple of times, these wheelchairs must have been

meant for someone's derriere much much smaller than mine, and they

had to go get the industrial sized one!

Welcome home and a speedy and complete recovery to you!

I did miss the Deb contraversy, but I have been around for a few

months. I just think that Nick likes to get your dander up for the

fun of it. His sarcasim can be either taken as light and witty or

annoying depending on how you read it. I would suggest not taking

the bait, but let people know the history so they know when he is

being sarcastic. Nick is involved in one of these insurance battles

that many of us are, so he has much understandable frustration. I

think he felt censored regarding the insurance discusion even though

he was only censured. I think things got escalated when they could

have been left alone.

I have tremendous respect for you and all the moderators in this

group. You have done a tremendous service and I do think that Nick

misunderstands you. On the other hand he is sometimes misunderstood.

I for one enjoy much of what he has to say, though I just sort of

chuckle when he gets sarcastic. I know it rubs all of you the wrong

way though - but taking the bait and responding only makes things

worse, which I sense that you know.

I know, I know -- That's why my replies are almost always tongue in cheek!

:)

We also enjoy what he has to say - when he isn't being sarcastic! ROFL I

think mainly it's a concern that things will get really heated again and the

group will be in utter turmoil. THe whole controversy with Deb really,

really tore the group asunder and quite a few people left (both old timers

and relative newcomers). The group had generally been peacable (of course,

there were misunderstandings, hurt feelings, discussions as well as debates -

but nothing on the magnitude or fervor as seen with the censorship issue).

Hi :

I think it would be much easier not to " misinterpret " you, (your

motivations, etc.), if you had directly disclosed in your post that

you are the program director of a surgical weight loss program which

offers the Laparoscopic Silastic Ring Vertical Gastroplasty, (which I

believe is a form of Vertical Banded Gastroplasty), and the RNY, but

which does NOT offer the DS.

You are certainly entitled to promote the idea that " [w]e must stand

together and promote our choice to have bariatric surgery, regardless

of what procedure someone has chosen. " I don't happen to agree with

you, and I can't help but wonder if your opinion, your source of

income, and your presence on this list are somehow connected. (I

also wonder why you use your signature line to promote a non-DS

related surgery program, rather than telling something about your own

DS experience, as is the custom.)

Nonetheless, you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

i don't think that it makes sense to compare the proximal RNY to the

DS. The proximal RNY does not have good stats for keeping the weight

off. Of course there are less problems relating to malabsorption.

There is NO malabsorption with the proximal RNY. IT is just a small

stomach with all the drawbacks of the loss of the pyloric valve and

NONE of the advantages of sustained long run weight off.

The only comparison that makes since is a Distal RNY and the DS. And

here the DS wins hands down, IMHO. People with a distal RNY have to

live on supplements to get in their protein. Not so the DS folks who

can eat most of what they need in good old f-o-o-d.
