Hey ...we had our surgery on the same day!! I am also experiencing the

runs...LOL At least it only happens a few times aday. I've heard many say

after 4 to 6 weeks things seem to settle down. I believe its just our bodies

trying to get accustomed to our new food flow. I am eating pretty much

anything at this point. I did have a few days last week that I was really

nauseous, but that seems to be better now. I just am starting to try protein

drinks although I am using a bottle of Ensure plus at the moment to fill in.

Its only 13grams of protein but if I drink 2 a day plus what I'm eating, I'm

coming in about right.

What types of things are you trying to eat? Have you tried chili and beans?

That seems to be really good on my stomach...better than some other things.

Its also 15grams of protein (I get the little microwave can) and soups are

usually pretty good to settle on the stomach. If I get queasy now, I eat a

saltine cracker and that seems to help.

I hope you figure it out...I am sure its hard when you really want some new

things to eat and nothing is working. Let me know how it goes....

I've heard the board is extremely busy with RNY's...so that is why. People

are very passionate about the type of surgery they get...although its no

reason to be rude. I personally feel all the surgeries have things to offer

and we all need to decide what is right for ourselves. Don't let it get to

you...you're not the only one that we've heard this from...

I am a little over 6 weeks out and the diarrhea is all gone. It went

away between week 3-4. So hopefully it won't last too much longer

for you, but everyone is different.

As for protein, have you tried a veggie burger patty? Like Boca

Burger or Gardenburgers? These went down pretty well for me. The

other thing was I had a big bucket of protein powder and I would

throw it in the blender with some ice and some chocolate silk

(chocolate soy milk). That was pretty good for a protein shake.

Also, I threw in some peaches, ice and protein powder. I didn't like

any of the protein drinks out there. They all made me sick. You can

experiment and try to make your own if you don't find something ready

made that you like.

I've been taking the vita4life vitamins which are specifically

designed for people with wls surgery. You can check out the site at

www.vita4life.com.

I don't know what to say about obesityhelp, I think that there is

this pervasive attitude that you have to suffer and be unhappy to

lose weight and somehow we're cheating or something by having a

surgery that allows us to enjoy eating and still lose weight. I say,

tough potatoes! We're the smart ones. But anyhow, lets not open

that can o worms.

Take care, and congrats on your great weight loss!!

I guess once you've made a life-changing decision, it'd be really hard to

swallow that maybe you made the wrong choice...(not that I'd ever tell a RNY

person that they chose wrong)..

I find I must add to the discussion that I believe there is no overall right

or wrong decision with both surgeries at this point. Only in the matter of

the individual. One can make a wrong choice, but I think only in the

perspective of their own life situation. I don't think RNY is a horrible

detrimental decision overall. It's just not my cup of tea after doing

research....and I was someone who was persuing the RNY but preferred the

other surgery performed by the infamous surgeon in the Carolina's...I sent

him my name SS# and everything...and was waiting for him to start seeing

patients again. I don't remember exactly how I found the DS, but for me

personally I feel that moment was deeply spiritual for me with an

intervention of my higher power as In have come to know her to be.

try string cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, tuna salad(without pickles

& onions in it), liver pates, kippers, sardines (but not packed in

tomato or hot sauce just yet), and water-packed tuna. Another thing

to try is making chicken noodle or cream of chicken soup and adding

ground babyfood chicken to that- or a beaten egg to make " egg drop

soup " . I've also heard mashed potatos and gravy- try adding the

babymeat to that, too. Another thing to try is refried beans and

cheese (maybe try fat free until your BMs firm up a bit). I have yet

to find a truly excellent protein drink, but so far Isopure seems to

be more palatable to me.. stay away from the " milky " type proteins and

try the " fruity " ones- Lindora, the Isopure premixed, extreme pure

pro- all of those I have heard mentioned as more tolerable, & I drink

the Isopure myself. Just experiment- and if you can get samples, try

the samples before investing in a huge cannister of something you

might not like. A final protein option might be the predigested

liquid protein- its not too tasty, but its 15 grams of protein in 2

tablespoons, and its 100% absorbable.

Also- the folks in the ObesityHelp chat room are just convinced that

the DS is not as good as the RnY.. but you notice that very few 5 year

plus postop RnY folk come in there? I think there may be a reason,

myself. The diarrhea will end, eventually.. watch for changes around

weeks 4-6. Don't give up.. you found the right place, !

Me either.. but when someone is whining about how they dump daily, or

will need an endoscopy, or how they can't eat steak, etc.. I just

type, " gosh, I'm so glad I got a DS.. We don't have that/those

problems! " That either gets folks asking about the DS, or I get boo'd

down.. but I support my facts with research, & they eventually have to

back off. I think its petty- they don't attack " bandsters " or VBG

postops, but its still OK to attack the DS. I also had someone tell

me to hush about the dangers of the MGB because " might get sued. "

I told him that you could only be sued for presenting slander as the

truth, & I had research to back up my statements. Some of those folks

are just.. differnt.

Hi Liane!

Actually, when I was considering the VBG when I first had insurance

problems with DS (still having 'em!), I was attacked on the RNY chat

room. It seems to me that ANY surgery other than RNY is not

acceptable to most of them. Though, I did make two VERY good friends

from that chat room. One lovely lady who has had the DS surgery and

another who is going to have the RNY. I don't go to that chat room

anymore but I'm glad I went there the first time because of the

freindships I made. Any DS'er who goes should just keep in mind that

you are in the SERIOUS minority in that chat room. :)

First... great choice in procedure, you will not regret it. I had

the runs for 2-3 weeks, then settled down to one BM Am normal except

for color.

Try flinstone CHEWABLE multivitamins twice a day. They are complete

and taste and go down like candy.

Foods I tolerated well the first few weels.

Dannon light and lively yogurt

Cheese

saltines

peanutbutter

eggs

egg drop soup

Isopure protein drink...let the bubbles disapate

2-3 weeks...you will feel a lot better, 5-7 weeks you won't even

realize you had surgery except for the 50 pounds you will have lost

best of luck

Hi ,

Welcome to the group and congrats on your weight-loss to date.

I'm pre-op, so I can't suggest anything that might help, but I wish

you luck.

I still use the Q & A database at obesityhelp.com just as reference

and/or reality check. There are many non-food,

non-surgery-specific issues that have to be dealt with after

surgery, such as emotional issues, anti-wls attitudes, insurance

companies, etc. I just check everyone's profiles to see which

surgery they had to get a better idea of their reference point, but I

agree with everyone in that it tends to be an " anti-DS " site only

because there are a whole lot less DSers than RNYers over

there.

Take care,

Tracey, I so know how you feel in that chat room. But I hope

everyone will take their turn and join in. It was because I met

there that I learned about the DS. My first reaction to her

information was " oh, I would never do that " ! (Look at me now!)

If there is a DSer there often enough, giving accurate information,

we can make a difference, and educate those who may really benefit

from the DS.
