Guest guest
, Here is a website that will explain about EF(ejection fraction). Guest guest
The ejection fraction is this: when your left ventricle (the big one that pumps blood to the body) pumps it never pumps ALL the blood thats in there out (even in completley healthy peopole). So the Ejection Fraction is the percentage of blood it pumps out of the heart each beat. Mine is 63% which means 63% of my blood leave my left ventricle every time it beats. 63% is considerd the low end of normal. 55% is considered the magic number... if you drop below it, your heart is not pumping enough of the blood each beat to be efficient. 35% to 55% is considered mildly low, anything under 35% is considered quite low. Dropping EF's over time can indicate chronic heart failure, as its a sign that the muscle is not working as well as it should, however EF itself is not a clear indicator of major heart disease, and when caught early, (which yours was at 40%) it can often be controlled with medication and diet... By the sounds of it your doctor is just wanting to keep an eye on it and see what it does over the long term... they are more interested in the trend of your EF than in an individual reading, because a particular patient can have a low reading one day, and a normal reading the next... if there are no other major findings it sounds like they will often just watch it for a while to see what happens... So try not to get too freaked out! sounds like your cardiologist is just being careful, which is wise! Good luck and keep us updated!
