Guest guest
Hi Larry, I may be rusty (my sons almost 4) and have to check the facts but from what I can remember it is a 50/50 chance of having one or two clubfeet. I know its twice as likely to happen in boys then girls. I could be off on it, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. But I'll check and find out and e-mail you directly if I find different. As far as I know having two rather then one isn't indicative of having a more serious condition other then clubfoot. Guest guest
Hey Larry, Our daughter, Sydney, was born with bilateral club feet. We acutally did not find out until she was born. Also there was no record of club foot from either side of our families. Whenever she was born we had an extensive PKU and some other tests ran to check her chromosomes recommended by our doctor. All of the test results have come back and she is perfectly fine besides her tiny feet. In fact, she seems to be much stronger and alert than most of the babies we have seen her age (now 2 months). We were told that she might have other problems but like i said everything was fine. Hope this helps a little. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
hi, Our son was discovered to have bilateral club feet at our ultrasound too. He had Ponseti treatment from birth and is now 3 and a half and there are no other problems. During my pregnancy I did worry that there might be something else wrong with him, but were reassured at several ultrasounds that he was otherwise normal - what they would be looking for on the ultrasound is a enlarged head which would indicate a neurological problem too. I do not think that it matters whether it is one or two clubbed feet. Certainly in the Ponseti treatment when it gets to the boot wearing stage to me it made no difference whether it was one or two feet as he had to wear boots on both feet anyway. I think if you are very worried about this you should ask your consultants as much as possible and make sure that you are going to the best ultrasound person you can find who has all the very latest equipment. That way they can give you as clear a picture as possible of your baby's health. Are you in the UK or else where as I can recommend a very good person in London. All the very best to you both and I hope there are no other problem for you. > 6 weeks ago at 22 weeks pregnant, my wife had her first ultrasound, > which showed that the baby had a unilateral clubfoot. Guest guest
Larry- We discovered my son's bcf the day he was born! My husband said to me (as I had c-section)-honey, I think is a little pigeon toed. Turns out it was bilateral clubfeet. We have no history in either side of the family. also has ABS related issues with his toes and fingers and because of this our pediatrician ordered an extensive genetic screening. It all came back negative-yippee skippee! To me-I think being bcf vs ucf is easier especially since both legs are casted and was balanced. Once they get to the shoes stage-it doesn't really matter as much. Apparently with ucf-sometimes the foot is shorter in length than the the unaffected foot-with bcf, the feet tend to grow the same size so no major shoe issues. Congrats-continue to do your research so your ducks are somewhat in a row, keep asking questions!! Take care, Kathleen mom to 8/28/04 bcf dbb 16/7--11 months today!!! > 6 weeks ago at 22 weeks pregnant, my wife had her first ultrasound, > which showed that the baby had a unilateral clubfoot. Guest guest
I know how stressful u/s can be, but you are very lucky to have found out early. My son was born with bilateral clubfeet and he has other issues as well. It is very common for a baby to be born with bilateral clubfeet and nothing else, probably more common than having other issues. Our doctors have told us that they check more for other complications with bilateral clubfeet because it is something that has effected both sides of the body and not just once, which could signal some other issue. As I stated, it is very common to have a baby with bilateral clubfeet and nothing else. If they dr. aren't concerned, then I definitely wouldn't be because they are always overly cautious. As for treatment, both feet with be casted for bilateral and both feet should be corrected and braced at a 70 degree angle. 11/19 unilateral v. bilateral clubfoot 6 weeks ago at 22 weeks pregnant, my wife had her first ultrasound, which showed that the baby had a unilateral clubfoot. Today, my wife went in for a follow up ultrasound at 28 weeks, and the doctor said that the baby might have bilateral clubfeet, rather than unilateral, but he could not be sure. Guest guest
Larry, I'm just catching up on older e-mails. I wanted to let you know that at our 24 week ultrasound we were diagnosed with a right club foot and then at a 26 week follow-up we were diagnosed with bilateral club feet. So the single, then double diagnosis might be the norm. Not to say that I was happy about the diagnosis, but I have read that with bilateral club feet the legs will both develop to be the same size. Compared to the slight difference in size with having a single club foot. I know that wasn't your question, but it made me feel better about the bilateral diagnosis. I am 29 weeks now. In the 1st ultrasound, the doctors noted an echogenic heart something or rather which occurs commonly. Plus they caused an needless amount of worry for us with an assessment that the baby's hands were clenched in a fist. The 2nd ultrasound showed there was no such clenching! After the false alarms which caused many sleepless nights, we don't want to know anything more. Good Luck to you! > 6 weeks ago at 22 weeks pregnant, my wife had her first ultrasound, > which showed that the baby had a unilateral clubfoot.
