Guest guest
Can anyone tell me if they have had a muscle biopsy, and if so, what part of the body was biopsied. I am supposed to have one and want to make sure it is done in the right place. The surgeon in planning on doing the biopsy in my left upper thigh. Guest guest
I had a biopsy of the upper left arm back in 1994- It was abnormal but "inconclusive". I wish they had done my leg- the scar on my arm makes wearing short sleeves and sleeveless tops uncomfortable. With my biopsy they did a 4" incision. Guest guest
Bonnie, The problem with muscle biopsies is that they will hopefully get a spot that has sarcoidosis. I suspect that they try to find the knot or hard spot (like a trigger point with fibromylagia) that he will take the biospy from. Muscles are the second most likely place to find sarc-- the lungs being the first. Do you have pulm sarc? I had a lot of trouble finding someone to do the biopsy and then I lost my insurance. I have asthma and restrictive airway disease, but my chest x-rays were always normal. I haven't had a chest x-ray for about 3 years. I had a electrophysiological study on my heart in July and had quite a few heart problems. I also have pulmonary hypertension. I am taking meds for my heart and lungs. I also shake really bad when I first get up in the morning and sometimes fall. My right hand has a tremor that is getting worse. I have muscle spasms and Charlie horses in my legs so I take Valium to help with those. I have gastroparesis and cannot digest very much food. I basically eat a restricted diet, easy to digest food. My eye sight is worse. I have trouble swallowing, get choked easily, and have a dry mouth. My memory is shot and I have to be really careful (put food on to cook and forget). My legs are really weak, hurt all the time, and are sore. I have lymph nodes that swell in my groin, underarms, and neck. I have numbness in different parts of my body from my feet to the back of my neck, the spots vary. I am so tired that at times I sleep 12-14 hours straight. Just cleaning my small apartment is a big job for me. I was in the hospital for 3 days in 2006 because my legs were paralyzed. In 2006, I used a wheelchair and now use a walker and cane when I need it. I am going the 13th to have the biopsy in my left upper thigh. He told me it will be about a 4 inch scar and he will go in pretty deep so I have to be put to sleep. After I get this done, if it shows anything, I will then see Dr. Baughman again. I am doing this mainly to get a diagnosis on paper. My cardiologist and rheumatologist-friend all think that I have NS. To be very truthful, (I know some of you know exactly what I mean), some days I feel like I am dying, other days I feel better. I agree with Dr. Baughman and the other doctors, I just want it on paper to be able to prove what I have. Thanks for listening. Guest guest
i finally had my muscle and nerve biopsy astusc two weeks ago monday and got results from pathaology, all were abnormal with moderate disease, it can't state what the actual disease is yet as my neurologist needs to correlate all the info, i had two muslces on my left thigh (my good leg) and the sural nerve on my left ankle. they put me under general anethesia due to the invasiveness of the procedure. so we will see soon what the actual diagnosis is soon. I also have learned that sarcoidosis systemic effects not need to be found in the actual granuloma itself, but as being systemic, the muscle involved will show throughout that that particular muscle is diseased. hope all are fine, and keep the faith, keep going kentiodaat@... wrote: Bonnie, The problem with muscle biopsies is that they will hopefully get a spot that has sarcoidosis. Guest guest
Ken, Did you have a meeting with the doc and he agreed to have you get a biopsy and then you went to a surgeon? They think I have fibromyalgia and arthritis but I wonder if the pains aren't sarc and thus be treated differently. I have sarc everywhere so why wouldn't it be in my muscles. My left upper arm has very large bumps inside the muscle and is sometimes very painful Will your treatment be any different? .S.ken stetson wrote: i finally had my muscle and nerve biopsy astusc two weeks ago monday and got results from pathaology, all were abnormal with moderate disease, it can't state what the actual disease is yet as my neurologist needs to correlate all the info, i had two muslces on my left thigh (my good leg) and the sural nerve on my left ankle. they put me under general anethesia due to the invasiveness of the procedure. so we will see soon what the actual diagnosis is soon. Guest guest
Hi mary, its been almost 4 years being sick and ofcourse no one knew what was wrong with me except psycho. A friend MD sent me to one of his friends a neurologist, he did a emg with a needle, not shock or on the skin, there is a difference, you need the needle emg that goes right into the muscle, that way the md can move it to each specific muscle to see which one is the diseased muscle. if abnormal on the emg, then the next step through sarcoid history is muscle biopsy of that muscle to determine the actual pathology (name of the disease) some do it as surgery under general anesthesia(best) and some locals. they can't just biopsy any muscle where they THINK the disease is, thats a waste and uncomfortable for you. Don't let them tell you, "they think its", thats no good, try to find a neurologist with movement disorder experience that will take you in and work on you real good and ask for a needle emg, and if positive, then a muscle biopsy if necessary ask for general anesthesia, its better for you if your body can handle it. hope all goes well, let me know how you make out, wish you the best. keep going and don't stop!!! ken Solberg wrote: Ken, Did you have a meeting with the doc and he agreed to have you get a biopsy and then you went to a surgeon?
