Guest guest
These are great questions. We are about to order the same brace and I would like to stay posted with whatever answers you receive. My son , who is 11 weeks old, has been in a DBB and then a modified brace that have caused him much pain so we are moving to the bar. Thanks, and (6-11-05 BL CF 24/7) bearalways03 wrote: Hi everyone, I took Noah's cast off today it was his last one and now its time for the Ponseti/ bar. I can get them on ok but he gets so mad and moves and kicks his legs sepratly and makes the heal come up so I can't even see it through the holes. I tightened the middle strap then looked at his foot like a half hour later and it was indented and a little redish purple. So I loosened it one notch and he gets his heal up again. Any suggestions? another thing does it mater if the heal moves in the right (non clubfoot) one? Is the foot suppost to look over corrected? His foot still points way out as if he still had the cast on. Did everyone have a problem with their kids when it came time to sleep? And the most important question, how long does it take untill he is use to these shoes? thanks so much I dont know what I would do without you guys & Noah 03/20/05 LCF P/M's 23/

Guest guest
Hi, , I'll try to answer your questions from my limited perspective (Lily's been in the P/M's since June) and hopefully others will chime in and correct me if I mispeak. It's absolutely imperative that Noah's heel not slip like you are describing. I really have to tighten the middle strap down to keep it from slipping and yes, the top of her foot is somewhat reddish purple when the shoes come off. That reddish purple color does go away (although it takes longer than the half hour that many folks/docs allude to). I think the important point is that she has not developed a sore underneath that middle strap, so I think tightening it to the degree I'm doing is ok. I do apply witch hazel (in the form of generic Tucks pads) to her foot once a day. Witch hazel or alcohol is good in toughening up their sensitive post cast skin and may help with the reddish/purple mark. As far as the unaffected foot goes, I think you will also want to try and keep it from slipping because the friction caused by the slipping might lead to pressure sores or blisters. That said, I do tighten the strap on Lily's unaffected foot by one less hole than her clubfoot. Her unaffected foot is a little bigger and I just cannot get to the next hole (without really making the top of her foot look horrible). The unaffected foot does slip by a very small amount, but still stays way down in the shoe. If it slipped more, I'd definitely add an " in-between " hole to the strap. Yes, Noah's foot should look overcorrected (the shoe on his clubfoot should be set at 70 [or at least 60] degrees to maintain this overcorrection). When he begins to have time out of the shoes and is bearing weight on the foot (esp. while walking), the foot will regress back to a neutral position (the overcorrection keeps the regression from resulting in a foot that turns in beyond neutral). Lily never had trouble sleeping in the FAB, even when she had sores in the Markells. It was her parents (ok, Mom) who lost sleep worrying. She seemed to adjust right away, but is an easygoing kid overall. I'm sure if her rather high maintenance big sister had to adjust to an FAB, it would have been a different story. From what I've heard other parents say, if the foot is properly corrected and the shoes fit well, most kids adjust in a week or two. Hope this helps. Our love & prayers go out to you. I think the transition from casts to the FAB was the most difficult part of Lily's treatment (for her parents!). You and Noah will adjust soon & things will be smooth sailing.
