Guest guest
Hurray - you are getting great advice from the Group - good on you for canceling tenotomy - also, don't worry about losing progress - I have heard of Ponseti working miracles with babies that have come to him really late, like almost a year, a year and a half old, and he still works miracles. At just over a month old, Lilee will be just fine - just make sure you get to the other recommended Docs ASAP - good luck - Pete > > I was able to get ahold of and actually talk to Dr. Ponseti himself. > He was wonderful! Guest guest
At Lilee's age, any progress lost can be regained so quickly that I would not worry about it. Enjoy a little more cast free time with her. Kelsey had been improperly casted and braced for 9 months when we got rid of it all and the doctor with it. She began casting again at 10 months, had 3 casts then the tenotomy. She did great and her foot is amazing. She does not have the atypical clubfoot but many other children from this board do so hopefully their parents will be able to give you more information about that. I believe that Kori has had some problems with the Shriners in Portland not following the protocol but I have read excellent things about Dr. Mosca in Seattle. jenni --- christee dawson wrote: > > I was able to get ahold of and actually talk to Dr. > Ponseti himself. Guest guest
Please hold off Dr. Jay at Dupont told me he was doing this and putting my son under at 8 weeks old, my son had a scar that grows with him and looks yucky! It has also left his foot stiff, which is why we are having so many problems now. He turned 4 this week and because of the decision at 8 weeks old, we are making our poor baby pay for it now. I think Dr. Jay did much more in there then snap something. He told us he was splitting the calf muscle in half to double it in lenth then lenghting the achiles tendon with it, etc. He tried telling me this was all normal, etc. It deffiatnly isn't we didn't need to put an 8 week old under anestesia and put him through days in the hospital if we could of just known then about the in office procedure and ponseti method then. Are you home today, I will call you if you are please let me know if you want me too. Michele

Guest guest
Christee- I'm glad you got to talk to Dr. Ponseti. Isn't he wonderful?! Please don't bother going to the Shriners in Portland if you think that Lilee might have a-typical clubfoot. You need to get to Dr. Mosca in Seattle. Kai's mom, Angel, has put together a website on his a-typical foot at http://adifferentfoot.freeservers.com/ Kai was treated by Dr. Mosca and also Dr. Ponseti. Don't worry about her losing progress. For all you know at this point, the foot was casted incorrectly anyway. She's so young, that a fresh start won't put you back at all at this point. I was wondering how they were going to keep her tiny little feet in the shoes anyway! Also, if you *really* want to go to Iowa, there are ways to get there- Angel Flights will fly you there (you can confer with Angel, Kai's mom, about how she flew to Iowa from the northwest), and you can stay at the Mc House while in Iowa City. Please keep us posted! > > I was able to get ahold of and actually talk to Dr. Ponseti himself. He was wonderful! Guest guest
Yes Marci, that's right, I should have clarified, he usually does do them under local at Shriner's -- it's my understanding that he does them under general at Children's Hospital because of their policy. Although I think he still is allowed at either hospital to use his discretion if he wants to or if the parents request one way or the other. You will be done with the casting before you know it! That was such a great time - the day we got that last cast off, I couldn't wait to give him that bath! Guest guest
The other thing I forgot to mention is that you may want to bring your pump or try to borrow one if you don't have one. It will be quite a few hours before you nurse and I was FULL of milk. Plus the nurses wanted her to have a bottle first with something (I can't remember--Pedialyte maybe??) after she woke from surgery. Which makes me angry now that I think about it because they said it would be gentler on her stomach and what's gentler on a baby's stomach than the milk it's mommy make for it??? Why did I say yes? Grrr....anyway, that's off topic. Just think about your boobies--you may need to pump! :-) > > > My daughter was born with her R foot, Club Foot. Guest guest
Hi, I've seen two doctors. One here locally at home that I chose no longer to be with when I began taking my daughter, Lhea to Dr. Ponseti. Here, at home, her doctor did put her under general anesthesia - and she was only 2 months old! Yes, I was very scared - how much is enough to put a baby that young under? However, with Dr. Ponseti, it was local! Good luck! marci21175 wrote: We see Dr.Dobbs at the Shriner's Hospital and were told that he does the tenotomies under local anesthesia. Mollie is three months old today and is in her second set of casts from Dr.Dobbs (3rd week though because he wasn't in this week). I'm not looking forward to it, but I can't wait to get done with all these casts so Mollie can have a real bath again!! I do think doctors have a different view of general anesthesia for a variety of reasons. My baby is supposed to be born with spina bifida, and he'll be put under general at around 12 HOURS of age to close the open lesion. I certainly think the tenotomy can be performed without general, and prefer it to be so myself, but I think that doctors often have that different perspective because of other issues they see. To THEM it isn't a big deal. As a parent, though, I agree that it is!! I think sometimes doctors don't realize what a big deal it is for the parents, we're not doctors (most of us, anyway), we DON'T deal with this sort of thing on a weekly basis--or even up to that point in our lives! My best friend just had a baby last week, and they kept him an extra day for jaundice. They wanted her to go buy a $250 breast pump, pump & leave her milk and then go home because insurance wouldn't pay for her to stay another night. She fought the hospital, and finally they not only allowed her to stay, but gave her a bed and let her nurse him! (They said he couldn't even come out of the lights to nurse at first and his bili level was only slightly over 17! AARRRGGHH!!!) Anyway, long story short, the next day I recommended her asking about the light blanket, and the doctor said " Oh, sure, you can have that, and you can go home now if you want then. " They were so mad! Why wasn't this option given to them 24 hours before?!!???! I think sometimes doctors don't realize what a stress it is to have a child in the hospital, or they may even think they're doing you a favor (like you'll be more comfortable) in a case like this. Well, that was a long story to say I agree! (Can you tell I still have my panties in a bunch over that whole thing??!!) And the other thing--Joy, how are you dealing with this whole thing with the new baby?? It sounds so non-chalant when you read it " Yes, my baby will have surgury 12 hrs. after birth " but you can't possibly be that calm about it, can you? My thoughts are with you girl! Peace and love and all that jazz!

The whole juandice thing has really seemed to get out of control lately, because I've been seeing a lot of cases like this myself. My sister had a similar experience, and I just don't get why they won't let mom FEED the baby. > And the other thing--Joy, how are you dealing with this whole thing > with the new baby?? At this point, I've had about 2.5 months to come to terms with the idea of my baby going through surgery at such an early, early time in his life. I know it's going to be necessary, so that helps. If I think too long about not being able to hold him for three days and where he's going to be at, I get a bit emotional. It's certainly a whole different ballgame than I anticipated, but I've gotten to the point where I'm taking it one day a time. When we first received the diagnosis, I didn't think that was possible. I am enjoying the pregnancy again, though, and I'm really anticipating the arrival of #4. Thanks for the thoughts, !! Guest guest
Joy, I've been meaning to tell you, when you are up here and if you need a break or need to get out of the hospital, you can feel free to give me a call. I live in Minneapolis near Abbott, and would be happy to meet up with you. I'm sure you'll be very busy, but I thought I'd let you know. I'll send you an e-mail with my number if you are interested. > > > > Joy--I agree with you. I'm expecting it to be pretty crazy traffic-wise. So far, things are looking really good with the baby, and we aren't necessarily having a c-section. That is good, but now we don't have a date set. Living in limbo. > I'll send you an e-mail with my number if you are interested. Please send me your number, and we'll see what we can work out sometime! My number is if you ever want to call me. Guest guest
Hi Christee, I just got back from vacation I'm sorry I never saw your post last Friday saying it was ok to call. I apologize, I should have said we were leaving for vacation in a few hours, etc. I waited and just went through most of the posts before responding, but I'm confused now. It looked like you canceled it, then I saw a post about bleeding. Did you go through with the procedure or cancel it? Also about angel flights, different ones will meet up, for example we are flying out this week on 3 different flights to get to Iowa and another 3 to get back home. Angel Flights NorthEast has arranged to meet up with Angel Flights Central for us, they were kind enough to work with each other and coordienate it. Please feel free to e-mail me at chele323232@... if you need to talk. Michele Collin's story http://www.geocities.com/chele323232
