Guest guest
hello, I am new to the group and do have a question. I saw my PCP yesterday and asked for referral for the gastric bypass surgery. I listed my comorbidities..asthma, hiatal hernia, acid reflux, and gerd. I could possibly also have sleep apnea, I am being tested today. The doctor was concerned I may not have a strong enough case to be approved as my bmi is borderline 41, and my hiatal hernia, and acid reflux came back as moderate issue not severe. Can anyone tell me their experience with kaiser and the approval process. I am curious to find out what the actual acceptable comorbidities are. thanks ! Guest guest
Maridiana (and anyone else in the Santa Clara area!)- Who is your PCP and is s/he at Kaiser Santa Clara, or somewhere else in the area? I have a co-worker who's interested in WLS, she's got Kaiser, but she has no regular PCP - only an OB/GYN that she's empanelled with. I'm looking for recommendations for her for a PCP who isn't already over-booked and will still accept new patients. Cathy C. > > Hi , > > First off welcome to this group. Guest guest
Cathy, My PCP with Kaiser Santa Clara is Dr. Rezvani (at the Homestead campus)...she is a fantastic doctor and takes an honest interest in the well being of her patients. The last I knew of she was still accepting new patients. When I requested entrance into the bariatric program, she was in total agreement and within the week I was slated for a local psyche evaluation and a nutritional class/meeting. The day I completed my second of those appointments, I notified her via Kaisers web mail and she sent everything onto bariatrics...had my notice for Orientation within 2 weeks of that. Before Dr Rezvani, our family had Dr Hwang ( offices). I don't feel Dr Hawng is as personable as is Dr Rezvani, but my very first visit to his office (regarding a lower back problem) he himself brought up the wls as an option to think about pursuing. Again, last I was aware, Dr. Hwang was accepting new patients. Hope this offers your friend some help. Guest guest
Cathy, My PCP is out of Mountain View which is a part of the Santa Clara Kaiser. I originally asked her and she wanted me to lose some weight on my own and then she would refer me. But the doctor that referred me was actually my infertility doctor, Dr. D'Amico (out of Santa Clara). He had no problem and sent it that same day. I was approved in a matter of a few days. And I got my approval letter within a week. I think it really just depends on your PCP and I actually changed my PCP a few times because I wanted someone who would talk to me and not rush me out of their office. Both Dr. D'Amico and Dr. Gu are very nice and take their time with their patients. I hope that this helps. Guest guest
The comorbidities which carry the most weight (pun intended) are hypertension, diabetes, and sleep apnia. Having any (or all, in some of our cases) would strengthen a borderline BMI. Tim -240 (30 BMI from 65) > > hello, > > I am new to the group and do have a question. Guest guest
Hanni, there is a good chance that you could get denied. If that does happen there is n appeal process that you will have to go through. First you would do your appeal to Kaiser and then if that doesn't work then there is another route that you would almost surely get approved. Most everyone that I have seen on this board that have had problems getting approved have gotten their approval the DMHC. If it does come down to going that route we do have a link to their web site. If you have any more questions just keep on asking them. Good luck Ramona
Guest guest
Hi Ramona, No I don't have diabetes yet. Insulin Resistance is pre-diabetic. My BMI is 40. And no I haven't been checked for sleep apnea but I really don't think I have it...but maybe I will see if I can get checked....just in case...
