We had the same problem. Collin stopped wearing them for that

reason. He will be 4 this month, and he knew how to take them off,

etc. We also tried lacing them backwards for a while so the bow part

was by his toes rather then the top. He could untie, double and

triple knots, etc (better then me!). I wish I had more advice, but

maybe lacing it backwards will buy you some more time. Good Luck! We

also tried bribes, threats, letting him color the shoes w/markers,

stickers, etc....

A few quick suggestions/reasons for this happening:

1. The bar might be too narrow. The feet slip out more easily when

that's the case.

2. Punch another hole to the strap, in case the leather has stretched.

3. Try putting the laces on upside down; that is, start near the ankle

and end up with them tied at the toes. (I think this was Pamela's idea

and worked for her long ago? is that right Pamela?)

4. Make sure the heels are completely down in the shoes before you

tighten the strap well then lace snugly.

5. Look for changes in the foot; sometimes slipping out of the shoes

means the feet are losing correction.

6. Is it a new shoe? maybe it's too large. Go back to the smaller shoe

until the foot grows a bit.

hope some of this helps..

it's important to get it figured out.. because if he keeps slipping,

the foot might start relapsing.

Thanks so much for everyone's suggestions.

They are new shoes and are a bit big. I'm going to try the laces

upside down and the duct tape and see if that works. I haven't

noticed relapsing, but we see his doctor next month.

Also, isn't there a cushion or something that they can put in the

shoe to help keep the foot in?

There is a cushion you can put into the heel of the shoe to help

keep the foot in. It's a sort of upside-down " U " shaped out of a

stiff foam which is about 1/8 inch thick. You can get them from U.

of Iowa Hospitals orthotics department (where Dr. Ponseti's patients

go), or you can make your own and put them in with rubber cement.

They go just below the upper edge of the back of the shoe. My son

Dinos was the incredible Houdini; there was no way to keep him in

the shoes; he just slipped his foot out no matter what. I found it

helpful to be absolutely certain that his heel was all the way

down. You can do this by completely opening the shoe (take the

laces out) and putting the baby's foot into the shoe, making sure

that the back of the heel is fully down and against the back of the

shoe. Then press down on the foot slightly and draw a line in front

of the toes. This way (until the foot grows) you can use that line

as a reference to be sure the heel is fully down and back. Also,

you can use some Dr. Scholl's foam, a small rectangle of it, between

the tongue of the shoe and the instep of the foot to put some more

padding into the shoe. This is good if the shoe is a bit big. Good

luck! Pamela Karydas, mom to Dinos, BCF, June 5, 2000.

Our solution to this exact problem has been the PM's. She CANNOT get these

puppies off in the AM! Heck, it's hard for me to get them off.

Duct tape would be my answer too though. I was *about* to resort to it

when the PM's came.

I would hesitate to put the plastizode insert into the heel at his age,

primarily because the insert is to help form the heel and at his age, he

probably doesn't need that anymore. Plus since the shoes are already

designed to mimic the insert, it may push into his heel and make him

uncomfortable. I think regardless of what's in the shoes, when the laces

come undone the foot can be slipped out.

I think some ingenious person here should design some kind of lace lock the

bigger kids can't get into. Something like the safety caps on the medicine

bottles lol.

Isn't it amazing how good they get untying knots? My 8 year old still

has trouble with knots, but can undo them in about 10 seconds.

I'm not sure how we're going to make it to three or four with the

shoes at this rate.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I love the idea of drawing a line

so I know where his toes go. I'll look for the padding and ask his

doctor about the cushion for the shoes when we see him next month.

Thanks Kori. We can't really afford the PMs so I'm going to try and

stick with the Markells, which we get free from Shriner's. But I'll

keep that in mind if we don't find something that works.

My son did this also...it really improved his fine motor skills

though! Also try pulling socks down over the top of the laces. My son

actually did his in his sleep. If your guy is pretty sleepy maybe he

won't continue searching for the laces if he doesn't feel them right

away. Good luck!
