Hi Deborah,

Congrats on such a successful weight loss! I read about people who eat a lot

and lose a lot, and people who don't eat much, then don't lose much. Hard to

know what to do when my time comes.

Not DS related, but I found a way to have a shot in the butt where I swear

you'll never feel it; lie on the table on your stomach, point your toes, and

touch your toes together. That makes the muscle not able to tense, and

therefore it's totally painless. I learned this from a pediatric nurse when I

needed a series of painful shots.

Hi!

I found several posts in the digests asking some questions that I felt I

should answer.

My labs are great, except that I am severely anemic at the moment, in the

process of being corrected with 8 iron injections in the butt.

Ouch. This came about due to several bleeding episodes last fall, caused

mostly by menopause and hemorrhoids. It has taken a long time to get

it corrected due to family crisis (child in turmoil, mother with cancer,

husband out of work, in that order over the course of 3 months, just normal

little stuff) that required my attention elsewhere. I keep praying for a

boring life and the message has just not gotten through.

I bought protein powder after surgery and the unopened can still sits on

the kitchen shelf nearly 4 years later. I should probably send it to the

trash. Since I like meat, and cheerfully ate jars of turkey baby

food, as well as lots of other such pureed stuff, like foie gras :), along with

all the milk, ice cream and yogurt I could swallow, protein has never been

a problem. I was quite conscientious in those first few months to keep my

protein intake high, but thankfully my surgeon placed absolutely no restrictions

on what I ate. I believe this " permission " to eat what sounded good has

been the greatest boon from the surgery. OK, after the weight loss.

(As an aside, has anyone thought to ask some of these surgeons how they expect a

group of folks who are morbidly obese to adhere to a diet post-op? If I

could have stayed on a diet, I wouldn't have needed surgery.)

My common channel is 100 cm. But I have a fairly bizarre intestinal

track.. My total small intestine length was nearly 800 cm, as opposed to the

more normal 500 cm. I have a 300 cm alimentary channel, and a

nearly 400 cm bilio-pancreatic channel. So I have about 13% of what I

had before to absorb fats. If I had been given any shorter a common

channel, I would have been forced to have a revision for excess weight

loss. As it is, I carry candy (with peanuts for protein LOL) with me

at all times to keep my blood sugars up.

I do have a problem with postural hypo-tension. That is if I stand up

too quick, the room starts to fade away and the floor gets real close.

Seems to be a familial problem since my 1 normal size sister and my tall thin

daughters are all afflicted. My 3 other obese sisters don't have the

problem and neither did I before WLS. Oh well, a little light headedness

or 157 pounds? I'll take the light headedness!
