Guest guest
Hey everybody. Okay, I have 2 questions...well, more like 2 concerns I guess. Anyway, first, Ava is just on the verge of walking. She's standing alone, and has taken 1 step. So I think she needs her first pair of " real " shoes. The problem is, her CF is a whole size smaller than the non-CF. So I took her to Stride Rite, and it would be $63 for a pair of (ugly) shoes that will MAYBE last her 3 months. They give you a whole 1/2 off the 2nd pair...wow!! Exactly what their normal sale is, with signs all over the store! Way to help me out! So then I check out Nordstroms, someone on here said they split pairs. They also have Stride Rite, and they'll split the pairs at no charge, but the only Nordstrom's in PA is a $5 trip down the turnpike. So it will still cost me about $50. I checked Target (I thought someone here said Stride Rite makes their shoes), they don't have 1/2 sizes in little shoes (she needs a 4.5 right and 5.5 left). I just don't know what to do. Do I just shell out the $$$$? Or just get her some nice cheaper shoes? HELP! Also, I MAY just be paranoid, but I feel like she may have lost some dorsiflexion in her CF. Is this really rare? It seems like when kids have relapses, I see most people talking about the foot turning in or something like that. It may just be my imagination, but I thought her dorsiflexion was REALLY good in the past--alot closer to the non- CF side, and now it seems, not as good? She just had a checkup 2 weeks ago, and he said her foot looks great. But you guys know how it is....HELP! TIA!

Guest guest
, I can't help much with the relapse questions but I feel your pain with the shoe dilemma. Kelsey has very odd feet when it comes to her shoes. Her feet are about 1/2 size to 1 size different as well. I got her 1st pair of shoes at Preschoolians and they will split the sizes for you as well but you have to place the order over the phone. Now, she seems to have the best luck with the flatter Nike sneakers which are actually cheaper than Stride Rite and still offer her a good shoe. I have not been getting her 2 different sizes anymore. We fit the larger foot and she seems to do fine with the shoe slightly larger on her clubfoot. Hope this helps at least a little. Jenni wrote: Hey everybody. Guest guest
, Thanks. I didn't know Preschoolians will split sizes. Maybe I'll check them out. I have a few pairs of " dress " shoes that I've put on her in the past, mostly I would just fit the larger foot & stuff a bit of tissue in the smaller side. But for her right now, just learning to walk, I really want the right size shoes. I would hate for her to get blisters from a too-big shoe, KWIM? Kelsey's older, right? Hopefully when Ava gets bigger we'll be okay with one size. I checked Payless today, and they actually have a new line that looks just like the typical white walkers from Stride Rite. They have arch support, extra toe room, made of leather...the whole nine yards. And the lady said I can go online and get coupons, so it would only be $22 for both pairs--much cheaper. Part of the problem too is it's summer, and those little " boots " look REALLY DUMB with all her little shorts and skirts. In the winter it'll be okay when she has pants on, but we *do* have to consider fashion, right? I don't know.... %-) > Hey everybody. Guest guest
, Kelsey is older so I understand getting that first pair to fit correctly. That is what we did with the Preschoolians for that 1st pair. They split the size for us with no additional cost. You might also check out www.pedoodles.com. Their sizes cover more than one actual size so a large fits like sizes 3.5 to 5.5 or something like that. I just got Kelsey's shoes from there and they are adorable and fit her pretty well on both feet with no problems. These shoes are similar to the Robeez soft soled shoes but they have a rubber sole so they can be worn outdoors. I got Kelsey the Kimberley Kitty ones and they are adorable and so soft. They are also cheaper than the preschoolians. Jenni --- wrote: > , > Thanks. I didn't know Preschoolians will split > sizes. Maybe I'll > check them out. Guest guest
, My personal thought on the shoe thing is that you don't HAVE to buy the expensive shoes. I think a reasonably good pair of flexible soled baby shoes from any shoe store are okay. I believe that is what Dr. Ponseti says too, I'm sure I will be corrected if I am wrong. I seem to recall Babies R Us has a good selection but I am not sure about half sizes. As for the dorsiflexion I tend to agree w/ Dr. Dobbs philosophy that the stretching exercises are not " necessary " but they can't hurt. We just do stretches, up and down pushing the dorsiflexion, about 30-40 quick reps, a couple times a day when playing; takes about 1 minute. In checking dorsiflexion I have also found that it matters in the way you hold the foot, at least with Sammy. I watched the way Dr. Dobbs did it, he places his hand on the bottom of the foot with his palm towards the toes and his fingers come up under the heel so that the tip of his finger is against the back of the heel, about where the tenotomy was done. He then pushes upward with his palm, dorsiflexing the foot and at the same time applies gentle pressure to the achilles tendon. I have found that if I do it this way I don't have to fight Sammy to relax his foot and we get much better dorsiflexion than with any other hand position. If the Dr. thought her foot looked great 2 weeks ago, I would doubt that much could have changed. If you really think she has lost some flexibility would suggest trying the stretching exercises for a while and then if you don't feel that is helping, talk to your doc. HTH, > Hey everybody. Guest guest
- My Darling is also on the verge of walking-not quite upright like Ava. We had our 3 month checkup on Friday and so I asked his doctor what to do about shoes. He said barefoot is best(of course) but there was no need to buy expensive shoes. He recommended any shoe that was designed for walking with a soft sole and flexible upper toe area. He said it was not necessary to buy expensive stride rites, etc. Hope this helps! Guest guest
SO I assume with bilateral CF parents do not have this dilemma, or do they??? > > Hey everybody. Guest guest
Thanks . That's kind of how I feel, too. I've pretty much decided against the whole Stride Rite/white bootie walkers line of shoes. I've always been against them, I think bare feet are best for learning to walk. I don't know what came over me...I got a little crazy! I'm sure everyone here can relate--I just want to get what's best for Ava, and when it comes to her feet, I'm a bit over sensitive I guess. I'll try doing those stretching exercises. It's probably just in my head, but I'm sure it can't hurt. I just thought that before her CF dorsiflexed almost as far as her non-CF side. I see what you're saying about how you hold the foot, too. I got worried because she was sleeping on my lap the other day and I tried it while she was sleeping, and at first I couldn't get it to bend very far. I know she wasn't resisting at all, she was REALLY out and totally limp. I'll have to work on it some and see what happens. AARRRGGHH!! Tell me, is there EVER a time when you're not TOTALLY waiting for a relapse???!?!? If her foot ever looks the *slightest* bit crooked, or turned, or bent, or smushed, or WHATEVER! I immediately think " OH MY GOD IT'S A RELAPSE!!! " Please, you experienced moms...tell me that goes away eventually!!! I can't even imagine how I'm going to be when she's DONE with her FAB! Thanks, > > Hey everybody. Okay, I have 2 questions...well, more like 2 concerns > > I guess. > > Anyway, first, Ava is just on the verge of walking. She's standing > > alone, and has taken 1 step. Guest guest
I would assume it varies depending on the child....not even all unilateral kids will have this issue, the foot size difference varies. I think the average difference between a CF and non-CF (on the same person) according to Dr. P's studies is only .5 cm, which is very tiny. Which makes me think--, was 's size difference always the same? KWIM? Was it a full size smaller when she was little, and only 1/2 size now? > > > Hey everybody. I think there was more of a difference when she was little, and it's only a half size now. But the thing I've noticed is certain shoes just fit differently on each foot. She'll out grow the one in length before the clubfoot one sometimes, but sometimes the clubfoot will have pressure points that bother her. Guest guest
's foot size difference has changed as she's grown also. I think it's less prominent now. Maybe it's because the feet are bigger, so the difference in length isn't as " obvious " as it was when they were smaller. She's always had between 1-1.5 shoe size difference. We have the same experience as Joy as far as different shoes causing issues. Usually I just buy one size of shoe and just cinch it up tighter on her clubfoot. I try to avoid styles that don't stay on well (i.e. clogs) if the shoe is too large for the foot. My biggest concern is making sure that the arches in the shoe don't hit her clubfoot wrong since it's a smaller foot in a bigger shoe. I like summer time when she can wear open toed sandals and flip flops because it's a lot easier compared to regular sneakers, dress shoes etc.! HTH! Guest guest
Thanks, that's kind of what I figured...too bad our kids aren't closer in age, we could share shoes! > 's foot size difference has changed as she's grown also.
