Guest guest
No I've never heard of anything like this and I'm sorry you have to be dealing with it. Have you considered 's sandals instead of the markell's? Just a thought... Chris Problems with Markells: Swollen Lower Legs Hi My son Jonathon was born on the 12/4/05 with a club foot (left) and a deformed left arm (75% size of right with severe contractures at the wrist in particuliar). His club foot has been manipulated by the Ponseti method. Things were going well until the last cast was removed After being fitted with his new boots (first pair given were too big) he developed a blister after one day. We persisted for several days until he managed to keep the boots on for a full day. As is our routine, we gave him a bath that night. He normally loves the bath but after a couple of minutes he started screaming. We noticed that the soles of both feet were not just red in colour but scarlet. After a period of time, the colour subdued but both calves (doesn't look the correct spelling) began to swell. We contacted the Emergency GP Service and was told to go to our local hospital. Jonathon was diagnosed as having a blockage to the venus blood drainage in his feet., and too sleep without the splint and contact the consultant in the morning, this we did. In the morning I contacted the Consultant (Surgical Appliance) who fitted the splint and was told to re-apply the boots. After approximately one hour, his calves began to swell again. I was able to arrange an appointment with the Consultant who had reset Jonathon's foot and he checked the legs for Thrombosis and other conditions but could not find any indications. His opinion may be that Jonathon has a nickel allergy to the leather boots. We were then told to stop using the boots and arrange an appointment with the Surgical Appliances Consultant to discuss options. An appointment is scheduled for this Thursday (14/7/05) Has anyone heard of any similar problems?

Guest guest
Welcome! Sorry to hear about Jonathon's problems. That's really odd. I assume you're in the UK- what consultant is treating your son? I would suggest that you email/call both Naomi and Dr. Ponseti for their input regarding your son's feet/legs. I think Naomi's email address is on Dr. Ponseti's website. I also agree that the custom-made sandals might be the best option for Jonathon if he does have a Nickel allergy. has sent shoes to the UK before (he is in Iowa, USA, near Dr. Ponseti). There are some children who have vascular issues in their legs and perhaps this is what your son has also. There is one mom who just recently posted on the yahoo clubfoot board (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/clubfoot) about her daughter who has vascular differences in her clubfoot leg. I think they would just have to do an ultrasound on your son's leg to diagnose this. Is he back in plaster casts right now? Guest guest
Hi Chris Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner but life has been even more chaotic that normal. After several appointments with Consultants / Doctors, we are no closer to diagnosing the reason for this problem. It may be a reaction to leather or the Markels being fitted too tight. Either way, the Consultants have agreed to try s. They were unaware of them but I downloaded information and took it with me. They sized Jonathon's feet and I believe, an order has been placed. Hopefully these will be more comfortable for my baby. Thanks for being there and taking the time to offer me support and advice. It is good to know that someone is out there when you need them. How is your child getting on? Regards wrote: No I've never heard of anything like this and I'm sorry you have to be dealing with it. Have you considered 's sandals instead of the markell's? Guest guest
, I'm glad you are getting some help. It takes a few weeks as he makes every shoe by hand but when you get them you'll see that they are much easier to use and more comfy for the child. Our daughter has used them from the get go and she's doing just great!
