Guest guest
Sharon- I know this post was directed at but I want to stick in my .02. I had my gall bladder out after losing about 70 lbs while living in Europe. My feel9ings are that the gall bladder is pretty unnecessary and many people who have perfectly healthy gall bladders end up with stones after a rapid and dramatic weight loss like one that comes with WLS. This is not to say *everyone* will have problems. Now that I have had the DS surgery I know that I am glad my gall bladder is gone. Basically, one less thing to have something go wrong with. I never missed it after I had it out, either. And boy, if you are a person who ends up having gallstones, man those things hurt like the devil! I think I would rather have someone pull all my fingernails out than go through that kind of pain again. It was worse than 12 hours of hard labor. Also consider some surgeons will not do the surgery without taking out the gall bladder as well. Anyhow, my most opinionated and unprofessional opinion is that gall bladders only serve to cause pain and suffering, get rid of the darn thing! I had mine out a little over a year ago and have had terrible bowel problems since. Some days it would take 5 Imodium to stop me from going. I know a few other people that have had this same thing happen. It was so negatively impacting my life and I was scared of what would happen after I had the DS. Well so far (it's only been two weeks) while the smell is certainly worse, the frequency and cramping is much better than before! Guest guest
Sharon- A little more on the gall bladder: Bile is a substance produced in the liver that emulsifies fat(sort of like dissolving for sugar but since fat doesn't dissolve in water it must be emulsified in bile). After it is emulsified then the digestive enzymes can break the fats down and they can be absorbed. Normally the function of the gall bladder is to store bile and when the liver's normal bile production isn't sufficient(i.e. you eat Mcs and Movie theater popcorn with extra butter ) the gall bladder gives an extra squirt of bile. Well, if you can't get that extra squirt then the fat doesn't all get emulsified, is not completely absorbed and then ends up coming out the other end. I did have some problems with diarrhea when I ate super greasy food but that mostly went away and was very much controlled by limiting my fat intake to 'normal' levels. Before my DS surgery the only thing that would really set me off was a cheeseburger meal from Mcs w/ supersized fries. Bad, bad, bad!! I have to say that the other thing the doc said is sometimes people have problems who don't get enough fiber as fiber will often absorb alot of that excess fat that your body doesn't absorb in the digestive tract. This helps keep the runs to a minimum. Fiber was never much of an issue for me as I loved to eat oatmeal(everyday for breakfast and sometimes lunch). Well, theres my second .02. Guest guest
The bile is produced in the liver and will be secreted into the intestines. The gallbaldder is a remnent organ probably there from the days in which meals were totally meat-- when our species lived off the land. It's a pretty useless organ really. If your doc is willing to remove it, excellent. This is my opinion only in Seattle > Hi - > should I ask about leaving my gall bladder in ? Guest guest
I had my gallbladder removed in Oct 1988. It cured my constipation but I never had any problems with liquid stools or diarrhea. I'm 6+ months out on my D and have no such problems now. in Seattle > I'm not Amy but I can tell you a little about gallbladder stuff.
