Guest guest
What did your docs advise you to do for your anemia? How much and what kind of Iron did they have you take? My feritin is low, and I don't want to have to wait for full blown anemia to fix it. Thanks in advance! Guest guest
I upped my iron (I was taking the bariatric advantage iron) to three a day. It's Ferronyll. It was more than 50 mg. of iron a day, and my system was not happy. ALso, I got an iron infusion.LLLORY@... wrote: What did your docs advise you to do for your anemia? Guest guest
Laurie I was on Bariatric Advantage but was adviced just to buy Iron Ferrous Sulfate any brand as long as I took more than 50mg 3xday. It worked and I feel great now. Just make sure you drink lots of water, I also take chewable benefiber and use some ground flax seed so with all the extra Iron I don't get constipated. Hope this helps. Take care. DonnaLLLORY@... wrote: What did your docs advise you to do for your anemia? Guest guest
In general most post-ops do not absorb the ferrous sulfate nearly as well as other forms. It does also tend to be more likely to upset the stomach, as well as causing constipation. Guest guest
Thanks Donna. I take the carbonyl iron from vitalady because it doesn't have the GI side effects. At least not for most people. Thanks for the info. If I have to switch brands, I guess I will. I'm going to up my carbonyl and see if I can get my PCP to redraw me in a month or so. Guest guest
I also have low ferritin it is 13. I've been working on this for several months the highest I got it to has been 15. I just retook the test friday and its down to 13 again my hemoglobin is also down my Dr. switched my iron for the 3rd time she called a hematologist and he wants me to take ferrous gluconate instead of the sulfate iron. So now I'm going to take the gluconate and 2 prenatal vits a day. I have to take the gluconate with 2 vitamin C's to help it better absorb. My dr. is also going to recheck my levels in a month again to see how this does. She is also going to refer me to a gastro intestinal Dr to possibly have a scope done. Lets hope the iron works so I won't need the scope. Any way. I just wanted to let you no that someone else has this problem. I think that liquid iron does the best for us as it did bring my iron level up quite a bit just not the ferritin. Keep on top of your labs and do compare them from time to time. Guest guest
Thanks Laurie, lately I have been kind of tired and lethargic. I am really not too comfortable with the advice from the hematology Dr. to take the new iron stuff I am thinking somewhere we were told that we needed iron sulfate not the other one. It is worring me but not to sure what to do about it since my pcp did contact the specialist about it but not too sure how much the hematology dr no's about gastric bypass patients. How have you been feeling? RoseLLLORY@... wrote: Best of luck Rose. Hope you get it up there on yournext labs. Guest guest
Rose, actually most doctors do not recommend sulfate iron for gastric bypass patients. It irritates the pouch and causes constipation for some people. I have never ever taken it, although it is what was prescribed for me by Kaiser when i was discharged from surgery. Try doing the kind that the hema recommends. Hope you get to feeling better soon.
