Guest guest
, poor little girl! No fun! I haven't experienced this but others have in the past or so I've seen here. I wonder if perhaps the new shoes aren't tight enough at the toes and she's moving about in them only in the fronts? Here's what I'd do if I were you. I'd take the area where the sore is and chop it off. First off, those blisters won't heal if she continues to wear the shoes. If it's just a little bit of shoe that needs to be cut out so her toe sticks out free it should be just fine. Heck, these shoes are so sturdy that you could probably cut half of them off and they'd still stay together! LOL Sounds like a harsh thing to do but I am fully convinced that once sores are present you can't keep putting pressure on that area for a long while. And you can't take the shoes off either, the risks are too great. Even after sores heal they can be aggravated by even the slightest pressure/rubbing and come right back. Has happened to us too many times for me to feel any other way. So remove the part that's rubbing and watch her toes to see what may have caused it. If you can tighten up the laces at the bottom any tighter than you already have them try that too. Another thing to consider is that the shoes are too wide. They do make them in narrow and now that she's a bit older perhaps her foot is slimming down in the front? Look inside the heel and see if your shoes are marked 1644M or 1644N. I think they make them in the standard three widths, narrow, medium and wide but they'll say inside what they are. Is the strap in the lower slot or the upper one? Perhaps if it's in the upper one try moving it to the lower one, that seems to be the best position for most CF in these shoes. I hope to hear she's healing soon, babies do not need/deserve to have sores on their feet, ever!! Guest guest
Hi , We put our daughter Grace in sandals this summer that almost (I caught it in the nick of time) caused a major blister. If Addison has been doing well in the shoes up to this point with no blisters and she is 15 mos, makes me wonder if it isn't perhaps her regular or dress shoes that are causing it? Especially if it is at the top of the toe, makes you think it may be rubbing at the end of her reg shoes. Poor thing! There have been tons of discussions on blisters and some great remedies posted to help them heal faster. Try doing a search of the archives and these posts should all come up. Hope her tiny little toe is feeling better soon!! & Grace > Hello, > > My daughter has been in Markells since 11 weeks (she's now 15 months > old). Guest guest
Blisters on the top of the toe? We had these and found they were from the tongue rubbing on the toe. Either from the tongue being to stiff and hitting the toe in the wrong spot or the shoe not being laced tight enough. I see Kori told you to chop the shoes. Great idea. We got a extra large pair on tongues from the orthotist (from old old shoes) They completely cover the toes-that has worked well for us. I still recommend Lanisoh lanolin cream on blisters, specially newly forming and non popped blisters. Rub it on several times a day and watch them disappear. Good luck Blisters/inflammation on big toe? Hello, My daughter has been in Markells since 11 weeks (she's now 15 months old). Last night, we noticed her left big toe is inflamed and appears to have a few blisters. I'm trying to figure out if her Markells caused this, or her regular shoes - we're so in the habit of keeping her socks on her that we didn't notice this and it makes me wonder how long it's been this way! Has anyone ever had big toe issues with the Markells? She recently (2 weeks ago) went to a larger size (2 1/2) Markells and they are definitely big on her, but she wasn't slipping out of them so I thought they were fine. Her poor toe, it looks so painful, and she lifts her foot when she crawls so it won't drag on the floor! No wonder she doesn't want to walk.... :-( Thanks for your help! daughter Addison, 7/3/04, bcf, FAB 14/

Guest guest
A couple years ago comes to me and says his little toe hurts. There is no sign of injury whatsoever, but for another couple days he tells me it hurts and it's hurting worse so he doesn't want to wear shoes, but still no sign of any injury but now he remembers he thinks he dropped a rock on it. Still, No red, no swelling.. .....he goes to spend a week with his dad and calls me hysterical a few days later his toe hurts so bad, I mean the kid was bawling hysterical it hurt so bad. If it weren't 600 miles away I would have just gone to get him but still, I'm thinking " It's just his little toe! " His dad claims he took to a doctor, but when came home, his toe was literally rotten. The whole toe, I really did fear amputation at that point from the severity of the infection that had grown on it. Wasn't easy but eventually we got him cured. The mystery remained until this summer speaking to a nurse friend I mentioned all this and she said Gangrene (?) can start when you pinch a blood vessel off, such as dropping a rock on the toe, no obvious damage at first but the lack of blood begins to rot the flesh. Anyway - long story short, these kids sure do get in to stuff we never dream of or even figure out completely so keep an eye on that red foot. s. Re: Blisters/inflammation on big toe? Thanks, everyone, for the advice. We had her 15 mo dr appt today, and it's actually not a blister. But the redness is spreading and her big toe is pretty " puffy. " I thought it may be an ingrown toenail (she has those darn weird toenails!), but the doc thinks she has some sort of skin infection. She gave us antibiotics, but she says that if we don't see improvement or at least no further spreading by tomorrow, I'll have to take her in again and they may have to do IV antibiotics. Fun fun. I'm really beginning to think this is not from her Markells. She's had absolutely NO problems up until now. The new Markells fit her fine and I don't see anything rubbing on the toe....plus, this is really more on the inside of her toe, and on the bottom. Who knows???!!! > > Hello, > > > > My daughter has been in Markells since 11 weeks (she's now 15 > months > > old). Guest guest
Thanks. I'm going to see if the antibiotics help first before I chop up her shoes, but I'm open to it! I was told by the orthotics department that the medium and narrow shoes don't differ too much. Personally, I cannot stand the Orthotics Dept at Children's here in Seattle. I'm thinking about ordering shoes through Children's Healthcare of Atlanta - they were so much easier to deal with, I never had insurance problems, and their costs were so much cheaper with the insurance co and than with Children's Seattle! Seattle's negotiated rates are crap. Since we're just getting shoes from now on, I'm wondering if that would be possible? Also, one other question - the Seattle Orthotics dept told me that I would not need anymore bars - she's currently using the gold one, bent in the middle. Is this true? If so, I'm thinking the shoes could potentially come from anywhere. Thanks! > >Hello, > > > >My daughter has been in Markells since 11 weeks (she's now 15 months > >old). As long as you have a script, any of them in town should be able to order them. They cost what? A whole $90? Paying any more is ludicrous if you ask me. They simply do not cost that much. If you can't find anyone to get them for you up there, try Portland. Doernbecher has an orthotics shop who I'm sure would be happy to order you in a pair. And shipping? I shipped a pair of shoes to the UK for something like $8 and they arrived in about a week. From here to there... I'd even pick them up for you and put them in the mail if you need. Check around and see where you can get them. >Also, one other question - the Seattle Orthotics dept told me that I >would not need anymore bars - she's currently using the gold one, >bent in the middle. Is this true? If so, I'm thinking the shoes >could potentially come from anywhere. > ummmm... what exactly are they saying? That she won't grow? duh! Sorry, but she'll need new bars. When Darbi's red adjustable bar broke this spring I had to go back to the gold bar (Angel gave me Kai's old red bar) because that's all Shriners carries here. But it was too short, by about half an inch or so. There was a big issue between me and the orthotist (not our regular orthotist who told me to come in and get it taken care of on his day off) who insisted that the bar was just *fine*. She kept measuring her shoulders and then measuring the bar and insisting it was not too short. They didn't have a longer bar at the time. Boy did I get into it with this woman. Darbi had started night waking and when that happens I know it's time for a new bar. See I'm not stupid and this is MY child and I know a thing or two about this brace darnit! She needed a longer bar! My idea was to put two bars together with hose clamps or screws and *make* a longer bar but this woman apparently didn't want to work that hard to do it for us (she actually said " I'll have to do some work to make that " - well aren't you getting paid to do *work* in the orthotics shop lady?? huh?? grrr...). All that aside, I did get the bar fixed and we came home with a makeshift adjustable bar with hose clamps. They had to cut off one end each on two bars and then clamp them together. Simple solution which I actually kinda like if it weren't for the hose clamps (ouch!). This was in... I'm thinking April or May this year. Since then we've moved to the PM's but now they're broken and she's back in her Markells till I get new shoes for her. OK, they're missing in my house lol! I have no idea what I did with them yesterday morning after she walked to me in them, doh! So anyway, last night wasn't a total success. She was hurting at 2am and I took them off at 3am. I put them back on in the am but then *she* took them off <grumble...> another nice thing about the PM's is that she cannot get them off herself - I like that a lot. So tonight (still can't find her PM's) I started to put them on and thought I'd better check the length. Sure enough, they were well inside her shoulders and when I adjusted it I'd made it at least an inch longer. So in a little over 4mo's she grew enough to need a whole inch difference. Darbi has had many adjustments in the past 2 years because children grow!! Don't tell me your child will never get any bigger! What are they thinking with that anyway? Dorks! OK - silly me typing away all this stuff... could have said... yes she'll need new bars, she's going to grow isn't she? lol! But then again you could do the same thing as we've got here... take two of your old bars, cut off one end and clamp them together. Then you wouldn't need a new bar lol! Of course bar padding is essential with this one. hose clamps are sharp! HTH - next time you're down south here (if that ever happens) you'll have to give me a call or email so we can meet for coffee or something! (oh - I just re-read your post a bit... bent in the middle? Are they idiots? Go back and tell them you want it bent in two places near the shoes. They will have to chuck this new bar and give you a new one. DO NOT pay for a new bar, their mistake. Bent in the middle... how is she supposed to walk in them with it bent that way? MAke the middle part flat so she can stand! If you need pictures, let me know. It JUST MAKES SENSE! OK yeah, I think they're idiots now for sure. Does Dr. Mosca know they have their heads in the sand on this stuff or what?) Guest guest
, Jonah had a skin infection of some kind on one foot this summer. He got these little pimply bumps and patches of puffy pink skin. The antibiotics cleared it up right quick. I also chopped the toes off a bunch of pairs of socks that were a couple of sizes too big. That way, he could wear those with the FAB and get some airflow in there. What's with this group and the chopping anyway? You can get the Markell shoes through just about any shoe shop. Some people even get them through Stride Rite. I think you can go through shoe shops to get the bars as well. Call around. Does she have an " adjustable " gold bar? That is, one with 6 holes in it? If so, it may be true that she'll never need a new bar. Still, it's better--IMO--to have it bent at the ends so that it's more stable for standing in. We come up to Seattle a couple of times a year to visit family. We'd love to meet up for a cup of coffee or something.
