Guest guest
Hi Kim: First of all find out how many kids would be in special ed. They are usually smaller numbers than kindergarden on up. In Leah's class there are two teachers and a total of 10 kids. The kids haven't really been coming sick except may be for a minor cold. They use a lot of cleaner in the classroom. I too was worried about Leah being exposed to so many more kids and she started early childhood the day after she turned three. I sat down with the teachers and spoke to them about mito and our concerns. They are very, very good about letting us know when some one went home sick or give me heads up if several illnesses are going around the classroom. They do smile and in our last IEP when Leah was going from kindergarden class back to preschool that Leah is the healthiest child for some one who we are concerned about illness. But that is because we stay on top of things and I don't understand either why Leah's immune system is so good. Leah goes to school 4 afternoons a week. May be you could try two days a week and see how that goes. Leah loves to be with the other children and they do singing at circle time, table toys, read stories, do craft projects and of course snack time. She also has gym time and that's where she gets to use a bike in the gym with a helmet and loves it. Check in to it. Leah has been going to preschool now since she was 3 years old and is now 6 1/2 years old. I would worry more about kindergarden than preschool for exposure. In preschool also the kids are in a more self contained classroom vs kindergarden where they mingle with a lot of other kids. Lunch time, library time, music time and then being with the other class when they go on field trips. The teachers said they could have Leah in their classroom until she was 7 and that is what is happening. So next year will be different for her and us as parents. Go visit the classroom where they may be. We got to observe Leah's classroom and ask questions. But you know your children best and want whats best for them. But now when I look back on Leah's years I'm glad I have her in preschool not only for her but for me to get a break during the day. That way I can volunteer at my boys school and also know Leah is getting the best care possible. Let us know what you decide. He thought the sooner the better to help them develop along. Here's my "beef" about it and I brought this up to him. I am scared to death to put them into an environment with a number of other kids. You know, the illness factor. When the girls get sick, they have nasty seizures and fall apart. The Good Lord must have been listening as we got home that night and sure enough, Lindsey had the worst seizure we have ever seen. Was He trying to tell me something????? I am okay with the girls going to preschool someday but, I don't think I am ready to send them right now. They just turned 3 on October 3rd. They still have three years until they will be going into kindergarten. Therefore, after this year, they will still have two years of preschool. So, am I being an over-protective mom and denying them the chance to flourish in an environment outside the home? (By the way, they get S/T and O/T three times a week in our home.) Or, am I being realistic in my thinking that they still have two years of preschool ahead of them next year. I just hate the thought of sending them off to school, getting sick... as we know other people send their kids to school sick...and something horrible happening to them. I didn't know if Lindsey was going to make it through her seizure last week and the thought of losing them is just haunting me right now. Thanks for listening!
