Hi everyone,

I would like to thank everyone for all the wonderful information on

this board. I am pre-op and have learned a lot as I have been

following the posts over the last few weeks.

I was really excited when I got a call about two weeks ago and was

offered a March 8th surgery date. Unfortunately, about two days ago I

started having severe pain in my abdomen. I ended up in the ER and was

diagnosed with an umbilical hernia. At this point they are not sure

whether or not they will have to postpone my surgery. I should find out

next week after I see the surgeon.

Has anyone had surgery with a hernia? If so, how did it impact your

recovery?

Cathy

Hi. To my horror, 6 months before my bypass, I suddenly developed a

big hernia next to the scar I had from 3 years before for Uterine

cancer. They told me I could get it fixed during my by pass surgery.

Dr. Baggs said OK but I would need a temporary mesh. During surgery

he found a hiatal hernia in my stomach and he had to fix that too. I

was a slow recoverer and did not prance around the hospital right

after surgery. In about 2-3 weeks I was prancing too. But two weeks

out, I saw that my original hernia had slipped out of the temporary

mesh and I have the same hernia again but smaller. Dr. Baggs saw it

today and said " I warned you " . Mine does not hurt and I plan to

have it fixed permanently in a year and get my extra skin off at

that time too. Everything else is fine. I have 10 little scars

instead of the usual 6. Love, Lilka

I have an umbilical hernia, which I have had for some four years

now. They did not repair it when it occurred, because my obesity

would make it impractical for surgery, even with implantation of a

mesh wall, to be successful. It did not affect my bariatric surgery

or my recovery (so far), but I have been told that once I reach a

stable lower weight, they will want to repair the hernia surgically -

which means they will do the tummy tuck at the same time (since it

makes no sense to do one and not the other, because any subsequent

tummy tuck would compromise the hernia repair), and both will be

covered.

So as long as they don't hold up your surgery, bless that hernia,

it's gold for you.
