Welcome Sam. First, I think that people who followed

the 1200 calorie plan adjusted as best as they could.

In a nut shell, they adjusted because they have gone

on to have their surgeries. I can't say that I

followed the 1200 calorie diet. I did a version of

Atkins because I knew what worked for me so that is

what I did. I had to lose 24 pounds and did it

without problems. I tell people to follow the 1200

plan though because it helps you with your eating life

style post surgery. You can do it. Make the 1200

calorie eating plan work for you and remember its not

a race and that you are going to have to put

everything you have in you out there. We will be here

to assist with whatever we can. I wish you well as

you begin this part of the journey.

I actually didnt follow the 1200 cal plan. I did Atkins to lose my

10%. Do what works for you as long as its sensible and nutrionally

sound.

I did not follow the 1200 diet either. I just used my senses. I cut

out sodas all together, ate lots of veggies and cut way back on pasta,

breads and carbs.

What about the exercise? I have arthritis in both

knees and can hardly walk. Any suggestions?

Thats my hardest time too. Why not try a protein shake at that time?

I will fill you up and give you some needed protein.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that tonight.

I'm so proud of myself, this morning I walked for the

first time in months. It is about a mile and it took

me 20 mins to walk.

Sam If your really so hungry later after dinner, try eating SF Jello, SF poplsicles. Sam How about chair dancing? It is a video you can borrow or buy from Health Education at Kaiser. You set and exercise, this is what I had to get started on. I have arthritis, Fybromialgia, a knee that before surgery would buckle all the way backwards and down I'd go, the doctor was talking knee replacement. Now it still hurts sometimes and I still don't have cartilage left, but it's bearable and I can live with it and it doesn't buckle since I've lost all my weight. So doctor said I don't need shots in the knee any more, and we'll see with time if the knee needs replaced, but for now wow what a difference in life after WLS and I exercise at least 5 days a week. Take care. Donnasamuel vaughn wrote: What about the exercise? I have arthritis in bothknees and

Personally,I just stay covered up.

The skin is really bad unclothed.

I try not to look in the mirror so I don't start to obsess about it.

Nothing that can be done while you are losing anyway.

Sorry I am not more help.

Sam Even if you don't do the whole tape at first, that's okay. Try to find a time which is good for you and do it at that same time everyday, and with time what a difference. Sam It varies for each person, depending on the amount of total weight lost. I don't like my arm's and my breast ( need a lift for the breast) and arm's defenitly cut. Legs are a little saggy but not bad, tummy a little. I've lost 131 pounds since orientation, and I'm at goal but want 4 more pounds. I'll be at 135, and will have lost 135, I started at 270. So it depends on what you start at and how much comes off, how often you exercise, and how old you are makes a difference also. Donnasamuel vaughn wrote: One of my concerns is the baggy skin. Sam If you do it every day, and stay on track with the 1200 calorie meal plan, you will lose weight. Believe me I lost 42 before surgery and only needed to lose 27. It seems like a silly tape, but it works when your use to no exercise. Take care. Donnasamuel vaughn wrote: I did part of the tape today. Hi Sam,

Both of my knees are completely shot. Hence, my upcoming knee

replacement surgery. Before I had my weight loss surgery, I was

dragging my self around on crutches. I still have a bum shoulder as a

reminder of those days. So I can certainly understand your condition.

I am sure by now that someone will have mentioned Chair Dancing. I

love the concept . . . but hate that particular video. There is a

video that I prefer. It is called Sit

Tight: A 'Sittin' Down' Workout and is available from Half.com for

a little over $12. It is probably available other places as well . . .

but I did not see it on the web site.

What I did was use the videos to learn some basic moves, then later I

would just put on some music that I really like and that I find really

makes me want to move . . . then I just chair danced to that. I was

really glad that no one could see me cuz I felt kinda foolish, but it

must have helped.

Also . . . if you haven't already done so, get a referral to Physical

Therapy. A therapist should be able to help put together a program and

using their gym can certainly be beneficial. Using the hand exercise

bike there was really a good way to get my heart rate up. If you

belong to regular gym, they probably also have a hand bike.

And . . . water aerobics really works well for some folks. However . .

.. I found that at my heaviest, it still was hard on my knees.

I wish you well in your journey. I feel very akin to those of us who

are challenged with mobility problems. Taking the weight off will most

likely not correct the entire situation, but it will make such a vast

difference. As I mentioned . . . my knees are totally shot, but even

before their replacement I am getting about so much better. These

days, sometimes I stride and sometimes I gimp along - but even on my

worst days, I no longer need my crutches or even my cane.

Take care,

Kay (in San Leandro)

Hi Sam,

Well, of course, every body is different. How much extra weight and how

it was distributed will greatly affect the ultimate result. So will

one's genetics and a number of other things.

We were discussing this at the San Leandro support group and one of the

men there said that he wouldn't be having any plastic work because what

saggy skin he had just didn't bother him. He even showed us his

mid-section - which I'll admit isn't nearly as bad as I would have

expected from someone who has lost well over 200 lb. (as he has done).

His arms look great, but he didn't really carry a lot of extra weight there.

Me . . . I carried my extra weight all over, but especially in my arms

and legs. Which means, among other things, that I had the worst " bat

wings " that any of the 4 plastic surgeons I consulted had ever seen.

Anyway . . . back to your question . . . I am dealing with my baggy,

saggy skin by having it nipped and tucked. In April, I had a lower body

lift and an extended incision up the front to pull in my midriff. At

the end of September, I had a brachioplasty (bat wing removal) and

breast lift (no implants). I am really happy that I had the work done.

I especially love the results of this last surgery. For the first time

in decades, I'll show my bare arms in public. I don't even care about

the scars. I still desperately need to have my legs done, but that will

have to wait our finances recover and I recover from my knee surgeries -

so for about the next year I'll be dealing with that extra skin by

hiding it.

Take care,

Kay (in San Leandro)
