Dear Mrs. New:

The length of time the child wears the brace depends on the age of the

child and the stiffness of the foot. There is availability in the

time in the brace. In an infant, usually the brace is worn full time

for three months, then 20 hours for a month, then 16-18 hours for a

month and then at night and naptime. Once the child is walking it can

be worn 12-14 hours a day. If the foot is very stiff, the brace may

need to be worn more hours and if the foot is very loose, fewer

hours. However, since we have seen late relapses, we now encourage

parents to have their children wear the brace to age 4 years.

I do not advocate going from full time brace wear directly to night

and naps.
