Guest guest
Hi Keeley, Guess what? Devin got his AFOs today. I know, we did it early, but that's because there is a snowstorm coming, and I'm so afraid to drive in bad weather. I asked the orthopedist while we were there for OT today if he had time to do ours today, and he said no problem. Here's what happened....... He tried the AFOs on Devin, and made some marks with a colored pencil where he wanted to cut down some (near the toe) and marked where the velcro would go. Then he disappeared for a while, then came back and tried them on Devin. They fit fine. (There is velcro at the top, and at the top of the foot, and Devin's are hinged at the ankle. I think you said 's are too). He gave me the instructions about having him wear them for 20-30 minutes at a time, then taking them off to check for red marks that may or may not go away, and to slowly get him used to them. We put his regular shoes back on him, made a follow up appt for three weeks from now, and then went directly to the shoe store. I went to a full service shoe store with a children's department so I could get some help. The girl there measured the AFO first, then showed me some different styles of shoes, explaining that velcro isn't really much better than tie shoes, and as a matter of fact tie ones may be a bit easier. So I ended up getting a pair of New Balance, extra wide, about two sizes larger than his normal shoe size. I chose the tie, New Balance kind because the insole slips in and out with no problem, and they slipped on very easily. Check out the NB if you have them there in Canada, which you probably do. Devin seemed to do well with the AFOs for the afternoon. His legs were a bit heavier, so he tired out sooner, but I'm sure that's something that just takes some getting used to. I only had them on him about two hours total today, and there were only a couple of red marks where they rubbed under his tube sock (oh yea, definately get the tube socks. I found some at Wal*Mart), but nothing that didn't go away. So there's our experience. I just wanted to share with you so you can have a heads up when you go on Thursday. If I hadn't gotten such good advice from the ladies on this board, I would have been lost through this! e *Ü*
