The Invisible

Disabilities Advocate®

A Message From the President

By Wayne Connell

It’s almost 2008 and I wanted to share some news about this past year and some exciting dreams for The Invisible Disabilities Advocate® (IDA) and its future.

First, I need to give a heartfelt plea that you will choose to help IDA to continue to reach out to people living with chronic illness, pain, injury and disability, as well as their families. We realize many of you are struggling financially, but please know that no matter how small, your donation can make a big difference! For those of you who can give in larger ways, please consider taking up the slack to give hope to others who are hurting. You can help by giving a year end donation and/or partnering with us on a monthly basis. In addition, we have many wonderful ways you can

support IDA when you shop and search the internet.

IDA is a 501©(3) non-profit organization and we need you to join us in this endeavor. According to the Partnership for Solutions, in the year 2000, the

U.S.

population was 276 million. Nearly half of the population — 125 million Americans — live with some type of chronic condition. About 60 million live with multiple chronic conditions. Thank you for helping us continue our outreach via the websites, literature and seminars. Thanks for listening and being a part of this great work.

Second, I would like to highlight some events from 2007. I had the opportunity to share with the

Denver

chapters of both the Lupus Foundation and the Sjögren's Syndrome Foundation this past year the seminar titled, But You LOOK Good! which is based upon our book of the same name. It was a great opportunity to encourage those living with chronic illness and pain, as well as educate their friends and families. I also was the keynote speaker sharing the same topic at the Arthritis Symposium sponsored by Poudre Valley Health System in Ft ,

Colorado

.. IDA attended a couple of local health fairs as well.

As many of you noticed, we have also made available various pamphlets for ordering on the website this past year! Please take the time to browse them all. We have heard many great testimonies on how much the booklet and the pamphlets are having a positive impact on families and friendships.

Third, I would like to tell you about some projects we have created! As you may know, we launched The Cleaner Indoor Air Campaign (CIAC) in 2006 at: www.CleanerIndoorAir.org. One of the many struggles I deal with at home is Sherri’s continually worsening Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS); this is on top of her Primary Progressive MS and Late Stage Chronic Lyme Disease. Sherri has gotten headaches from perfumes and colognes for many years, but it took a turn for the worse about 4 years ago, as the chemicals began attacking her nervous and immune systems. Now she is unable to be around people using any type of fragrances including laundry detergent, soaps, lotions and deodorants, etc. without

severe reactions.

I know many of you suffer from Environmental Illness as well and it is a growing problem within the chronic illness population. In fact, there are now an estimated over 36 million people battling MCS. The CIAC is impacting the world and giving people the tools to make changes in their own community. It is a great resource to pass along to friends, family, businesses, doctors’ offices and churches. Please spread the word and join the cause!

We have also made available Memorial Funds in which people can set up a fund in memory of their loved one. In addition, we have set up a project to educate people about Service Animals, particularly to those living with Invisible Disabilities. Our latest project, Programs 4 People was just made available this month! It serves to help people find assistance with food, clothing,

prescriptions and more!

Fourth, I am so excited to see what lies ahead for the organization in 2008, as we continue to reach out and educate through the internet and seminars. We also have a dream for the future and that is to design a But You LOOK Good! seminar on DVD, along with workbooks which can be ordered and shared with your local support group, organization, friends and family. Again, we need your help in order to continue our vital services and programs!

Finally, I want you to know that The Invisible Disabilities Advocate® will keep fighting for the understanding of chronic illness and pain. People need to believe those who live each day in pain and fatigue and what they are going through is real and that they are in need of compassion and not judgment. IDA wants to be a source of encouragement and a champion for those in need. Join IDA’s Online Support Group, tell a friend about IDA and share about the Cleaner Indoor Air Campaign. Order some pamphlets and booklets for your friends, family and doctor’s office! Make a donation today!

Sincerely,

Wayne R. Connell
