Guest guest
This is all good news, except the ear infection. I hope it clears up soon. Curious, who is the Springfield Missouri doctor? Again there is a doctor close (er) to my home I haven't heard anything about, like the one in Little Rock Arkansas. Springfield is a 3 to 4 hour drive from here. How long has he/she been doing the Ponseti method and how qualified is this doctor? I know you are happy with the results and that says a lot but then again there are a lot of docs lately using the method with out proper training. thanks, s. Talked to a pediatrician about Ponseti I had to take in for an ear infection on Friday and I saw a pediatrician I haven't seen before. Since I like to take every opportunity to tell doctors about Ponseti, I mentioned to him that was born with clubfeet and that we were going to see our orthopedic doctor that afternoon. He asked me who the doctor was and I told him Dr. Mack at Shriner's in Springfield, MA. He looked closely at 's feet and mentioned how great they looked. He said there were several different methods for treating clubfoot and I told him we used the Ponseti method. Suddenly he became very interested and said he had just read about Ponseti, but had never known anyone who used it. He continued to look at 's feet while was happily walking around the examining room. He began asking me questions about the method, mentioning several times how unhappy he was with the results of his other clubfoot patients who had had surgery. I told him about Ponseti's 95% success rate and that we were four days away from having major surgery when we found out about it. He wanted to know if the casting was painful and I told him that casting with 's original doctor always hurt him, but the Ponseti casting never bothered him at all. He wanted to know why the casts went all the way up the leg and when they did the tenotomy. Finally, he said he was going to push for Ponseti in the future because he was so unhappy with the results of his other patients. He wanted to know what doctors in MA used Ponseti because there are no doctors in Maine where we live. I told him that I was thinking of writing a letter to our former orthopedic doctor and tell him about our success with Ponseti so he could give his patients another alternative besides surgery. The pediatrician suggested I draft it with my pediatrician and have her sign it too! I'm also going to send this pediatrician the article that Dr. Dobbs wrote and give him a list of Ponseti doctors in MA. I'm a little disappointed that our pediatrician has not shared this information with her colleagues. But I feel confident this guy will get the word out to patients in their practice. Now I'm thinking of writing the other pediatric practices in my area and sending pics of 's feet to let them know about Ponseti too. and 11/10/03 bilateral cf dbb 14/

Guest guest
I'm sad to say my experience in this area is completely opposite. People dont' want to know about Dr. Ponseti's treatment, they just want to talk about their own problem-doctor or whatever and are not receptive to hearing there is an alternative. s. Re: Talked to a pediatrician about Ponseti , Glad to hear that had such a good check-up with Dr Mack! Way to go little guy! I do hope the ear infection has cleared up by now... It's wonderful that you got to share your story and show off those perfect feet to someone who has influence over where children go for treatment. I have shared Ponseti treatment information with anyone in our area I can think of who might come into contact with parents babies born with clubfoot (pediatricians, family practice doctors, OBs, OB departments at our local hospitals, radiologists, midwives). My children's pediatrician and I put together a little packet that has a note from him (anything on letterhead always looks more official), a note from our family, a note from a Ponseti doctor " near " us (who is 300 miles away...), a copy of the article in the journal Pediatrics http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/113/2/376 and a reference section with a whole bunch of links (Dr Ponseti's site, the Global HELP booklet, 's links site, this group) . I received several follow-up calls from medical personnel wanting to know more. We're not in a very populated area, but at least the word is out there. Let me know if I can be any help as you put something together with your doctor. Guest guest
, you go girl! Good for you for sharing your Ponseti experience with that ped! It sounds as though, based on hearing your experience, he could be a huge proponent for the Ponseti Method -- which is fantastic news for any of his future clubfooted patients! Keep on spreading the word! Daiga and Owen, 02/04/03 Unilateral LCF, FAB 14/7 > I had to take in for an ear infection on Friday and I saw a > pediatrician I haven't seen before. Guest guest
I tell everyone who comments on his shoes/bar about Dr. Ponseti! Especially if they tell me that someone in their family had to wear the shoes because of clubfoot. I tell them to make sure to pass along the treatment name in case they should happen to have a child with clubfoot too. In fact, I just met a woman today at the fabric store who has a 21 year old nephew who had his foot broken to correct clubfoot. I told her to be sure to tell him about the other treatment in case he ever has a child with clubfoot. > > This is all good news, except the ear infection. I hope it clears > up soon. Guest guest
, Glad to hear that had such a good check-up with Dr Mack! Guest guest
Naomi, What you put together is wonderful. Then did you send all that to these different people or how did you distribute it? I'd love to do something like that here. and 11/10/03 bilateral cf dbb 14/7 > I had to take in for an ear infection on Friday and I saw a > pediatrician I haven't seen before. Guest guest
I think some people are overwhelmed by clubfoot and just do what seems easiest and that is to just follow what their doctor says. I am sad to say we never researched clubfoot at all until we were faced with major surgery. Had we done research earlier or had contact with someone who knew about Ponseti things would've been different. We were not expecting clubfoot and when was born we just did what the doctors told us. and 11/10/03 bilateral cf dbb 14/7 > I had to take in for an ear infection on Friday and I saw a > pediatrician I haven't seen before. Guest guest
That's awesome!! You're really brave! I told our pedi about Ava's treatment, he's always very interested when she has a checkup, but I'm a chicken when it comes to telling anyone else (doctors, that is...friends always get the 25 minute " Dr. Ponseti is a genius " speech when they make the mistake of asking!!!) > I had to take in for an ear infection on Friday and I saw a > pediatrician I haven't seen before.
