I use a cane, forearm crutch and when my feet are really bad, a

wheelchair. I tend to use the cane mostly although the forearm crutch

is great when my foot hurts so much I can't put any weight on it. It's

very sturdy and you can put a great deal of weight on it without it

slipping out.It still has a handle on the end but you can release the

handle to use your hand for getting into a purse, etc... I also bought

the kind of purse that hangs across your chest and back so it won't

slide off when I am using my crutch. It stays in place when I need to

get into it - very handy.

As for losing your balance, I don't think we ever " get used to it. "

It's always a surprise to our body that we suddenly lurch to one side

or the other. It happens so quickly. I usually grab walls, tables,

anything within reach. When I was still working and it was really bad

I had to sort of crab-walk along the hallways and rooms, clutching at

the walls to keep from falling. Never thought at that time to get a

crutch. Now I know better although I still avoid it whenever possible

because I hate the attention it causes. -
