Hi all,

After all day flying, Dawn and I did arrive " home " on wed, March 1st.

Thursday and Friday were all day, apointment after class after

apointment, after class, after...well, you get the idea. *weary grin*

Saturday and Sunday were a sort of mini family reunion with parents,

children, and grandchildren all congregating on our hotel room.

Monday, after one final test, we drove Will(our 4 year old) to his

Grandmothers to spend a few days while Dawn is in the hospital.

In effect, we did the same testing and classes in a few days instead

of over many months. BTW, if any one else has to go outside of

Kaiser, do what we did and take copies of any test results you can

with you, they were a big help.

This morning (Tuesday, Mar.7)we went to the hospital and Dawn was

given her WLS. In adition to the hospital staff, a good family

friend who is an RN is helping me care for her. All went well, and

she is doing good, sipping fluids and walking, and looking marvelous

for someone so soon after such a major surgery.

We'll do the one week follow up next week and be flying back to San

afterwards.

Well, she is sleeping and I'm exhausted, so I'll quit rambling and

try to get some sleep myself.

G'Night y'all,

Mike

Give our congratulations to Dawn, and thanks for the post, Mike.

Sounds like you've both had a whirlwind journey, but you've landed

safely on the other side. We'll look forward to hearing more later!

So glad to hear everything went so well Mike. Give Dawn a gentle hug for me. Keep us posted on her progress, walk, walk, walk, and sip, sip, sip... you know the drill. :)

Great news, Mike. I'm glad to hear that Dawn is doing so well! Keep her up and walking. In the next few weeks, she may have peaks and valleys of energy. Make sure she walks consistently...that will help her stave off any depression she may experience. The depression is the result of the anesthesia in her body, and also, the estrogen that has been stored in her fat cells are being released as she loses weight. So, walking out in the sun will be very important to help her combat what is essentially like a massive PMS cycle. Also, sometimes there is a mild form of buyer's remorse...because if you've used food as an emotional crutch for a long time, you suddenly realize that crutch isn't there anymore...and if you hven't prepared properly on a mental level, that becomes a bit overwhelming. The good news is that in the very beginning, her insides are all inflamed, so she will

barely be able to eat anything without feeling full physically. Psychologically, people vary. Some (like me) enjoyed not being hungry all of the tie. It was freeing. Others feel regret that they can't eat more. You know, "Is this what it is going to be like forever?" The reality is that portion control will be important for the rest of her life if she plans on keeping off the weight. but, as time goes by, she will definitely be able to eat more. The tummy stretches. There are meals when I feel I am eating quite a lot (although, comparatively, it isn't a huge amount), and others when I barely eat a couple of bites before I'm full. As long as she listens to her body, and doesn't get in her mind that she SHOULD eat more when her body is saying, "Yeah, ok, finito." she'll be fine. On the flip side, there are the rare rare few that get off on the not eating thing, and they start being

anorexic. But that's pretty unusual, and usually doesn't last very long. Don't worry about it in the beginning...some people are a bit afraid to eat because they don't want to stretch their pouch, and they are afraid of feeling sick. That will pass with time. Remember, she has a lot of fat that she can live off of before her body goes into starvation mode. I'm saying all of this because it is sometimes very hard for spouses to know whether to coax eating more or not. Don't. Let her feel what her body is telling her. Try not to worry her with comments about her not eating enough. That's normal, and in fact, one of the desirable elements of this surgery. That will help her lose the weight. If she starts having "problems", you'll know it. She's a bright cookie, and hopefully she'll continue to come to the board for support (I"m sure she will) and she'll do just

great!!! Walk with her, be supportive, don't be threatened by the new beauty she becomes....try to focus on the fact that she'll be much healthier and you guys can have a longer, more fulfilling relationship together because of the changes she is going through. It will make your marriage stronger, as long as you maintain the right attitudes, and you realize that this is a life-changing event. Good luck! It's going to be a great journey for the both of you!
