Judy, I understand how scary it can be going to a new doctor, plus having to repeat your story all over AGAIN. I will tell you that my experience with Dr. Baughman has been very good. I've seen him 4 times. He is very tall & chunky with a booming voice, but he's not at all intimidating to me because of his sense of humor & also his hair. He wears his hair in a bowl haircut that looks hysterical to me. Take a tape recorder, because he talks fairly fast & gives you a lot of information. He is fine with you recording & will even tell you when to start. The first time I couldn't get the recorder to work & while I was frantically digging in my tote bag for the AC cord, he took the batteries out & put them back in, which took care of the problem.

I have always had someone drive me to Cincinnati & returned the same day, so I don't know about hotels & such. But Baughman's secretary is very nice & helpful. I can't remember her name, but if you call his office number, she will either answer the phone & have a voicemail message, and she is very good at returning your calls. So I would call her, with the list of questions that you have about the airport, hotels, transportation, etc., right in front of you. You might even want your husband or son to do it, since you get confused & overwhelmed like I do.

Take the actual MRI, CT, Xray films, etc., along with the reports if possible. If your doctor(s) haven't already sent recent lab results, take those with you. Also type up a brief, concise history of your disease (of course, your son should do the same if he's also seeing Baughman), the particular questions or concerns you have, & what you hope to accomplish by seeing Baughman. I made up a small binder for him, with dividers to separate my history/symptom update, doctor's summaries, labs, lung function tests, MRI's & xrays+, med list (I include current meds, plus at the bottom I have "past meds," listing when I started & stopped Pred, etc.). In the very front of the binder, I put a page with pictures of myself before & during my sarc journey. He really laughed at my captions & was pleased with the binder, asking me, "Is this mine to keep?" I attached the photo page so you can see what I did. For those who can't open the photo, I'll put it in my album in Photos. You might not want to do that, but I would attach a photo (as you are now) to help him put a face with the medical record. Also take the names, addresses & fax #'s of any doctors you want to receive a copy of his note.

Make a copy of your list of questions, etc. for all 3 of you, plus Baughman. That way, you can be sure that you get all of your concerns addressed. The first time I saw him, I was the last appt. of the day & he was running about an hour late. He spent an hour & half with me, then escorted me & my friend to the elevator, rode with us to the floor we needed, then walked us to the walkway leading to the parking garage, to make sure we didn't get lost. That alone made me a fan for life! That first visit, he mailed me a copy of his note. Since then he has dictated the note & printed a copy while I waited. He does sometimes get things mixed up, like the dates of labs, etc., so I go through my lab & xray reports, etc. with a highlighter. If the note he dictates has errors in it (they have been minor, like saying my second Bell's palsy was on the right, when they were both on the left), I don't bother saying anything to him there; I'll make notations on the report & either mail the corrected report back or email him. He's also very good at answering emails. I do make sure I inform any doctors that get a copy of the report of any errors.

As far as lab work, he has always given me an order to take to my local lab, or just put his recommendation in his note & my local doc has ordered it. Dr. Baughman is very willing to talk directly with your local doctors. He is a pulmonologist, but knows more about systemic & neurosarc than most neurologists. He conducts & participates in a lot of research.

I do believe that you will benefit greatly from seeing Baughman. Just make sure you take that tape recorder! I was amazed as I listened to it on the way home how much I had missed during the visit. When is your appointment? The first time I went I found out that Kuwaiti Kim had an appt the same day & we were able to spend some time together between her appt & mine. That was really cool! Good luck, sweet Judy. You know we'll be holding you, Joe & Bob in our thoughts & prayers.

He still has that same haircut?

why can't he get with the program? Maybe he is doing a comb over to hide his baldspots. Sharon L. Schuckman sharupac@...http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-JWi9FSUic6c9n1.CvK6AmA--?cq=1

Well, the haircut is bad enough, but what really bothers me is the big skin tag hanging out of his nose. I just feel like taking my swiss army knife & whacking it off! Obviously, it doesn't bother him.
