Guest guest
Hi Nicki, Congrats on the transition to the Ponseti/s' My dughter also has unilateral LCF and her calf was noticeable from an early age (at leat to me it was!). Her doctor (Dr. Herzenberg in Baltimore, MD) made mention of it for the first time at her last appointment in June saying that it was a pronounced difference now and would be lifelong and possibly more noticeable as she grows. Her foot has been 1 - 1.5 shoe size different since her first pair of real shoes. My friends all say that if they didn't know to look for it, they would never notice the differences. I have not had anyone mention anything about her foot/leg since we stopped wearing the DBB 23/7. Guest guest
Zach was born with right c/f and quite honestly, you can't tell which calf is bigger. The difference is so insignificant that it's hardly noticeable. We've never had to purchase two different size shoes either. The difference in size of his feet is only a couple of centimeters - again, nothing major. I know this isn't so for all children though, so we consider ourselves lucky! I was not born with clubfoot, but my calves are two different sizes. My Mom said the doctors told her I was " smooshed " in the womb and this is why. Irregardless, my calves actually have a more significant difference in size than my clubfoot boy! Guest guest
Nicki- We too see Dr. Colburn (my son is 3 1/2 now, so only once a year are our visits, we were just there in June)! Anyway back to your question. My son is unilateral left too. No one (not even my husband) can see the calf difference. I can and so can Dr. C, but he said it is very slight. I think I can only see it because I've always heard of the calf size difference since I first started researching cf. I think it wasn't noticeable until he was about 2 and really started to shed the baby fat. His feet are 1/2 size difference, but I just buy one size and it it is fine. My son's foot wasn't very severe, so maybe that has something to do with it too. I'm not sure just guessing. I do remember when my son was 12 weeks olds seeing a bilateral CF boy in Dr. C's waiting area and his calves were both extremely small. I assumed by son's CF calf would end up looking like that but it hasn't. A stranger would never even notice just like they can't tell that he ever had CF. > Hiya: > > Our unilateral CF 7-week-old son just emerged victorious from his post- > tenotomy cast.
