Technically, I think it is easier to get at anything with an open procedure. I currently have my appendix, but I'll be happy to see it go in order to avoid what my friend went through with her acute attack last spring. I haven't had the DS (yet), but I had my gallbladder removed in September 2000. It was removed laparoscopically. My gallbladder started misbehaving during and immediately after a liquid fast diet in which I lost 95lbs in 10 months. Rapid weight loss often results in gallstones, and I even took Actigall in hopes that I wouldn't have problems! Didn't help a bit. I can see where removing the gallbladder and/or appendix would add time to any procedure, open or lap, but I will note that the DS lap scars I've seen on some people are in the EXACT same location as my gallbladder lap scars, so it can't be that far away. For those of you who have not experienced it, I will note that gallstone pain is something I would not wish on my worst enemy...ever...and I've got some pretty evil enemies! I suffered with it for six months because I thought my body was readjusting to eating food (not shakes) and/or I kept getting food poisoning. Boy, did I feel like an idiot when my doc told me what it was. -

Glad to be rid of mine in 1988.
