Guest guest
Hi : Yes, I did have people (my son and mother) tell me to just keep losing and not have the surgery. I think they were afraid that I would not be ok after surgery. I lost 62.5 lbs before surgery and explained to them that I can always lose weight but I just cannot keep it off. My case manager also understood that is why I wanted the tool....Plus, I really do not think it is good to keep playing the yo-yo dieting game which probably is what helped make us weigh what we do.....You are the only one that knows what you need to succeed. I lost 137lbs nine years ago and gained it all back plus 15 lbs....I knew I needed this tool to help me keep it off this time. I started my orientation in Nov 2005 and I should finish my lifestyle 4 class on Feb 10th 2006. So far all together I have lost 40 lbs. I started at 324 and today my weight is at 284. A few of my support ppl are have asked me if I think I will need to have the surgery. I explained to them that I have always been able to lose weight but it always comes back, plus some as you all know. One of my support person thinks that I should just stick with the meal plan that I have been on and see what happens and the rest of my support is saying they support me either way. Did any of you have this happen? I'm sure I'm not the first. I feel that I'm so ready and that I deserve this tool.

Guest guest
, hi and nice to meet you. Look, if you wait, wait because YOU want to and know that it is the best thing for YOU and not because of someone else. A lot of people that don't really understand our situations or the surgery to the fullest extent are ignorant (I am not saying that to be mean but its the truth). Gordy postponed having his surgery and was very successful with losing 80 pounds probably a little more but I am not for certain if it was much more than that. He decided to have the surgery in December of 2005. Every decision you make about you should be based on you. Take input from people especially if you know they are genuine and absorb it all. I would hate for you to put your surgery off and then look back six months to a year and have put back on that weight or just simply maintained and wished that you had of done the surgery. In a nut shell, pray about your situation and then make YOUR decision based on the information that you have learned from your research. There is no right or wrong thing here if you make the decision because YOU choice to. It only becomes wrong in my humble opinion when it is due to someone else making you make choices about you. Be encouraged and no matter what you decide, decide for you and we will be here to support you no matter what. We just want you to be informed (well informed), healthy and happy....bottom line. Guest guest
Your doing what is best for you. Many of us have lost these same 30- 40lbs over and over again... and they always came back with friends to boot. Less then 1% of people whom are morbidly obese will ever loose the weight and keep it off. So you can advise them, as you have, that it's not about loosing the weight short term. The surgery is about gaining a tool to assist and support life long weight management. When you start to loose the " natural " way you will run into supporters whom think that if you just do that, you will be fine. How long is it ging to talk someone to loose more then 200lbs?? We all know it didn't happen over night to get this way... so years.. 30 years to be overwieght.. means spend the next 30 trying to loose it. And while it takes it's sweet time trying to loose it... you still have all the health issues raging inside of you and recking havoc and doing damage. You decided what was best for you, you stick to it. No one lives your life, and no one goes through your day being you. If you are committed you will be successful in the long run. keep up the good work!! Guest guest
I totally agree with you Pam, my husband went with me to orientation and he was trying to talk me out of doing the surgery, but eventually he relented. Do what you want with your own body, . They don't have to carry your load or feel your aches and pains. Guest guest
—I really urge you to do this, loose your weight before you have permanent damage to your body from your weight (I mean your FAT). I didn't start to loose my weight until I was nearly 48 years old. I was taking two diabetes pills plus injecting the maximum amount of insulin every day, taking high blood pressure & cholesterol pills too. If you can loose the weight AND KEEP IT OFF without the surgery, more power to you. But remember this is a great tool that can really help you loose and keep off the weight. Also, the majority of WLS patients don't have any major complications. Even though I've lost over 130 pounds, I still have neuropathy (numbness) in my feet and sometimes hands, and my doctor tells me that this is nerve damage, and they don't have the technology (yet) to fix it. (I understand they are doing research to regenerate damaged nerves) So, I strongly urge you to loose your weight now! You will feel so much better, and will be able to enjoy a healthier life. --Sandi H. Guest guest
Ive always said that losing 100 plus pounds is like climbing a mountain without a rope...we can get so far up and then slip back down. The same for weight loss, we can lose so much and then we slip back and gain even more. WLS is like the rope...it helps get us to the top, nothing more. Its like a do over. We get a second chance to do it right. You have to make the decision for yourself, no one else can. It was the best thing Ive ever done for myself. Even in my recent struggles to stay on track....I am so thankful for this second chance at life. Guest guest
Yes this exact thing happened to me. I started at 270 at orientation with so many health problems also, I was so determined that I lost to 228 at my surgery date. I was trying to be talked out of the surgery by my husband, my mother and others, partly because I almost died before from a surgery and I've had 14 surgeries and procedures so they were scared, but I made my mind up this was for me. I knew I would die early if I didn't get my weight and health all back. I knew I could lose more, but would it be enough? Would I keep it off? Then I just decided I wanted to do this to make sure I could get all off and get much more healthy and I did. I am so happy I did it for me and now so are the ones who tried talking me out of it. This is for you, you must decide for you. Take care. Donna wrote: Hello all,I guess you can say that I'm a lurker....it seems I'm always reading your post but I don't post much. Guest guest
, I too am a lurker. I waited 3 years to have this surgery. I was at 289 when I had the surgery on 8 Aug 2005. I now weigh 194 (5 months later). I felt bad about not being able to complete my military career with a little over 4 yrs to go. So now that I have lost weight, I called the recruiter and asked what the weight requirements and Physical Training requirements were for me (at 39 yrs of age). I have 50 lbs to go and I can re-enlist and further retire as I should have by now but could not. I work for the government now and have invested about 7 yrs in and have met my career status requirements so when I re-enlist and retire, I can come back to my civil service position in the same grade/pay as if nothing happened. I love it. I am so thrilled that I made the most important decision of my careers (life). As a single parent of one teenager and one preteen, this was a very important step for me. My children and I had to sit down and discuss everything surrounding this surgery. Although many have advised me and supported me, it really came down to what was important to me and my children. Now my daughter and I are starting to run together and she is so excited to exercise with me again. It has been years since we ran together. What a great thing to be able to share athletics with my children again. I had forgotten how wonderful it was to run with my children. Being overweight took a couple of years from me and having the surgery gave me my freedom back. Your title "Surgery or Not" reminds me of Shakespeare "To be or not to be" that is the question. I want to be free from obesity and I do not want to be overweight. (smile) I wish you all the best. Take care. Guest guest
Junior I know what you mean, doing all the things that we haven't done for so long or just never could do. Last weekend I went to the snow Donner Ski Ranch with my boys and girlfriends, my friend and her daughter. They all snow board, this time my friend and me just messed around and all the others did the snowboarding, because my friend just had a hysterectomy 3 weeks ago. If not this year next for sure I want to take snow skiing lessons, I don't think I could do the snow boarding. New fun, new excitement and experiences. WOW! Take care.
