Guest guest
I need an idea of what were getting into... will likely start on the cocktail next week... I have an idea of whats in it (CoQ10, carnatine, etc), but im trying to wrap my head around what it all means for a 2 year old... what form is it in? is the taste reasonable? how much of a fight is it to get toddlers to take it? how many times a day do they take it? are all the different things in seperate bottles, or can you get them all mixed? has always been awsome at taking medicine, but were talking tylenol and motrin that is super sweet... im worried this will be a challenge... any tips would be helpful! Guest guest
I have a two year old on the cocktail, so maybe I can help. Grace does take alot of medication ontop of her cocktail, but it fluctuates on a need basis. Currently, and thankfully, she is doing quite well and only taking the CoQ10 and Carnitor. Carnitor has a slight cherry smell, and is in a liquid. I mix her Carnitor right into her milk, and she never notices the difference. I have checked with Dr. Cohen to make sure this is O.K, and it is sometimes also on the leaflet from the pharmacy that it is fine too. This seems to be the best way to give it orally. You have options when it comes to CoQ10. You can get it in either a liquid, pill or chewable form. The best site to get it is www.epic4health.com, they will give you a discount if you tell them your child has mito. The liquid has an orange flavor, but is sort of thick. It also can be mixed with fluids, but does change the flavor of the drink. We use the chewables around here. Grace actually loves them and reminds me every morning that she needs it. If you go chewables be warned that they are NOT in a childproof container, so put them in a cabinet or someplace where impossible for a 2 year old to get into. (I thought over the sink would be good enough, until I discovered Grace has mastered the art of using kitchen chairs to climb. Thankfully there were only 4 pills left, but she ate them all, in the time it takes to change a baby's diaper.) I would not recommend getting the liquid capsules that you get at a local store. We tried them once because they are really cheep. Obviously they cannot swallow pills at two, but the liquid inside is like oil and cannot mix with anything. They just made a big mess. Thankfully now that Grace is a little older, the above methods work well for her medications as long as she is only taking the two. When she was younger she refused to eat or drink most anything because it usually had medicine in it. Eventually she started to decline and we ended up having to have a g tube placed for a medication port. She still has the g tube, but thankfully it is rarely used anymore.
