Guest guest
Congratulations! I have to agree with you-the casts did weigh a ton. I used my Boppee the entire time I nursed and it was such a great help-it supported the added weight wonderfully. With the DBB- will be wearing the Markells. There is a wonderful file that Kori put together on " tips and tricks " , it was so helpful when began wearing his shoes-we are now on his 3rd pair!! Enjoy this time! I checked the picture out-she is beautiful. I wish we had taken a " before " picture. Keep asking questions-we are here to help! Guest guest
KC- Congratulations on the birth of your daughter! I'm so glad she was so healthy for being so early. Lucky you to of missed those last 5 weeks of pregnancy which were a killer for me;) My son was unilateral left and we just had to try many positions with breastfeeing for us to both be comfortable. He is 3 1/2 now so I can't remember what position actually ended up working. I did give him baby Tylenol the first 24 hours of each casting because he cried alot for the first 24 hours but then was fine. The DBB is a bar with Markell (open toed shoes) shoes attached to it. You may have to request the shoes if you daughters foot is too small. Small feet have a hard time staying in the Markell Shoes. > HI Everyone- > I have been a part of the group for a couple of months and wanted to > share my exciting news. Guest guest
KC - I can answer your questions about the Dobbs brace: this brace has a couple different variations. The one he is using now, is especially great for younger babies right after they come out of casts and is very nice to avoid the blisters and pressure sores many people deal with with those tiny smushy baby feet that are difficult to put into the traditional white open-toe shoes (Markell's). They make a mold of the baby's foot and make an AFO (Ankle Foot Orthotic) type shoe that then attaches to the bar that he has designed that has articulating hinges at either end allowing the baby to move her legs independently while still maintaining the outward rotation and dorsiflexion necessary. This brace is a bit tricky to get if you are not in the St. Louis area because he has not been able to find a company to make them more widely available yet. However, if this option is of interest to you I would either contact Dr. Dobbs directly at mattdobbs@... or have your Dr. contact him. He has been able to help many people in other states and even overseas obtain the brace when there is a request for it. This articulating bar can also be attached to the traditional Markell shoes. This option is more easily obtained, your doctors office should be able to get you the bar from O & P Labs here in St. Louis if you would desire, I think they are around $250 for just the bar. Let me know if you have any other questions about these. Thanks, > HI Everyone- > I have been a part of the group for a couple of months and wanted to > share my exciting news. Guest guest
Krishna and -- CONGRATULATIONS! If we had just stuck around Sacramento a couple more days, we could have met in person... And you missed out on being verrrrryyy pregnant in all that heat. We're glad to hear that the casting is going well so far. Dr Lerman truly is an out-of-the-ordinary, great doctor. They use the standard FAB/DBB there with the Markell open-toed boots. You can ask next time you're in if they will get you the newest version which have a cut-out in the heel area (this allows you to check on the foot, make sure it's in there just right). You can print out a flyer from the Markell site: http://www.markellshoes.com As far as breastfeeding goes, it can be hard enough to get the hang of it without the extra bother of the casts! I found I had an easier time if I propped Jonah's legs up with a rolled up receiving blanket or something. The Boppy might be worth a try as well. You do realize that as soon as you figure it out, she'll be in the FAB and you'll have to figure it out all over again?... Wishing you all the best! And looking forward to meeting when we are next in town. (Yukko-Congrats on your daughter-you have great tastes in names!) came into the world on Saturday, August 6 @ 4:39 pm. She was 17 inches long. Not bad statistics considering my daughter was 5 weeks early. All is healthy and we have already started the casting process with Shriner's in Northern California. I love my doctor. If any parents live in the Northern California-- Shriner's in Sacramento is a great place for the Ponsetti method. My husband and I started her when she was 6 days old and we will continue to see them every week. Most likely she will have a tenotomy and then continue with the DBB. I do have a few questions for parents out there. has been in her casts for a couple of days and I was wondering about any advice on positioning with breastfeeding. The casts weigh a ton and I was wondering what positions are best. Most importantly, I was wondering if I should ask the doc about giving her tylenol for pain. I am sure it is not that comfortable with the casts on. Did any of you give your children tylenol for pain? Also, I read many emails about Dobbs brace & Markells. Shriner's uses the DBB brace. Can anyone give me the game plan for these types of tools? Thanks, KC PS. 's pic is posted--I still think her feet are cute!
